Week 9
This week's episode Dagger of the Mind

And the usual rules:

1) No one can user later undiscussed episodes.
2) The movies are a no no.
3) Later Star Trek series are out of bounds as well. We'll treat this as Star Trek Year Zero.
4) New Episodes Air Tuesday Nights at 8pm on NBC
5) If you have that Alberta station you may post 1 day early but you must use spoiler boxes.
6) You may treat this as it were the sixties on the grounds that the discussion sticks to the show. Each new episode is a new episode

Synopsis:
While on a supply exchange with the Tantalus colony, a Penal colony, the Enterprise picks up a deranged stowaway. After a chase he is captured and turns out to be Dr Van Gelder a scientist from the colony. Pressured by McCoy Kirk must beam down to investigate the incident only to discover the head of the colony Dr Adams has been doing some bizzare experiments.

Some thoughts

A decent episode, not great but decent.

Spock uses a neck grip to knock out Van Gelder. He also uses a "Vulcan Mind Meld". I'm surprised it is called that and not Vulcainian... It seems like some sort of hypnotism by the way he talks though I'm not sure I understand the use of pressure points he refers to.

McCoy forcing Kirk's hand is an interesting dynamic. It Seems the Captain has to answer to any questions brought up in the cheif medical log. Nice little touch. Also keeps the Captain from becoming too much of a tyrant.

I guess in the future criminals are sentence to reformation rather than punishment. This prison seems a little too touchy feely for my tastes, Adams experiment aside.

Dr Helen Noel is way too forward for her own good. She should not try to embarrass the Captain the way she does. Though Kirk shouldn't hit on crew members either.

Did I mention how much I love the Female Uniforms? Dr Noel's seems cut err a little differently that the others we've seen so far.

Liked the fate of Dr Adams, though I wonder how long it takes to be Neural Neutralized to death. Kirk seemed to have been left alone for a short while as well.

Oh yeah... I also like that the transporters don't work through shields as seen in the begining.

Lethe didn't seem very happy or well adjusted to be an example of a cured person.

Didn't we see something like this already on Wild Wild West ?

James Gregory did an excellent job as van Gelder. His reaction to not being to say what he wanted was actually painful to watch.

This thread is rather dumb kingpengvin. It was lame the first time and had me confused, but now that I understand what is going on I think it has run its course.

Lets leave these threads for the last Enterprise episodes, with no rules.

If you don't like it, then don't participate, no one is forcing you. You want to discuss Enterprise feel free. :wally

Actually, I kind of like these threads. I did a version of TWOK as tho it was 1982 and it was interesting seeing everyone's input.

Role playing as tho this were 1966-69 with a MB system already set up is also a good way to see the genius (and the stupidity) of the original series across the backdrop of contemporary America.

When the Trek Dopers lose interest in this, the threads will die of their own accord. Until then, let those interested have their fun.

...and again, the Enterprise is the galaxy's most elaborate taxi service. Worse than that, they're apparently just a freight hauler, this time. Heck, they were exploring the edge of the galaxy a few episodes ago, and dealing with god-like beings. Now, they're back to delivery-boy status. What gives?

A question about the transporter: does it make sense that they (and the computers) could totally deconstruct, transmit and reconstruct that shipping container, without noticing there was a guy in it? Wouldn't they're maybe be some sort of alarm or something?

I liked this exploration of possible future penal systems. Morgan Woodward was just right as the OTT Van Gelder.

Hey, the actress that played Dr. Noel, Marianna Hill... well her real name is Marianna Schwarzkopf (sp.). Her uncle was a police officer who dealt with the Lindberg Baby Kidnapping, and her cousin, Norman, is a Major or something like that in the Army, serving in Vietnam. Wonder if his career will ever go anywhere?
