So I was watching Attack of the Show! (The new, lamer form of what was once The Screen Savers) yesterday, and they had a project featured to make a USB charger for your PSP. Well, I have no PSP (at least not yet), but I made note that USB outputs 5V (which I’m sure I knew before, but never really paid attention).
Well later that night, I get bored and am about to hit the hay when I remember the project, and take a look at my cell phone charger. Sure enough, 5V output! Huzzah! I think, and go about looking for a spare USB cord. Lo and behold, I have one, still in it’s packaging! (the fact that I have a spare USB cable laying around just because should probably help clue you in to my geekiness, really). Then I find the charger from my older phone, which uses the same connection. So, I pull out my Swiss Army Knife (wire cutters and strippers are for pansies!) and some electrical tape, and get to splicing. Five minutes later, I’ve assembled what I hope to be a working cell phone charger.
I get out said older phone, because I paid too damn much for my new phone just to fry it because I switched the polarities or accidentaly shorted it out, and plug the older phone in. It lights up and says “charging!” Success, I shout in my head and leave it be for a few minutes to make sure it still operates.
Unfortunately, my phone was already fully charged a that moment, so I couldn’t test it out fully at the moment. But now after letting it drain for a day, I plugged it in, and it charged up quickly. Maybe quicker than the regular adapter, but I’ll have to test that out later.
