Well, I Googled my birthdate, October 5, 1942, and except for my arrival it was a fairly slow news day. American planes (size, type and range unspecified) from the carrier U.S.S. Hornet attacked Japanese vessels (size, type and heading unspecified) off Bougainville “with little success.” Also in that day U.S. Marines (one of whom was my uncle Vern) were dug in on Guadalcanal, where Japanese reinforcements had been landed the previous night under cover of darkness.
In the good old U S of A the Saint Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees in the fifth and final game of the 1942 World Series by a score of 4-2. After losing the first game of the series on September 30, the Cardinals rallied to whip the Yankees in four straight.
