Should the description of the Cafe Society forum be changed?

As per this thread, should the description have more emphasis on including threads about cooking?

Currently, it is “Our salon for art, drama, literature, movies, music – all the artistic disciplines – if it’s about art or entertainment, it goes here.”

Personally, it confused me to hear recipes in the forum, till I realized that the name is Cafe Society.

However, I don’t really see how describing it as “Our salon for art, cookery, drama, literature, movies, music – all the artistic disciplines – if it’s about art or entertainment, it goes here.” would hurt anything, and it might be a little less confusing to newbies. You might have something there, Annie-Xmas.

I think it’s pretty obvious to anyone who reads the board where the good recipes are.

Cooking is one of the great creative arts. A great dish has as much merit as any other work of art (and tastes much better, on the average).

Just my opinion. I’ll take your opinion to the rest of the staff.

your humble TubaDiva

I sometimes think it oughta be retitled “TV, Sci Fi, and Miscellaneous.” :dubious:

Cooking and restaurant discussions (about the food, not the service, that is) seem like logical Cafe Society topics. Broadly speaking, it’s the cultural board, and great food is part of great culture.

The category I see confusion about is sports – threads seem to split betwen CS and IMHO, for the most part. I wouldn’t include sports in CS, myself – but I have no great objection to them being there.

I think it would be nice to include cooking in the forum description also. It wasn’t obvious to me initially that cooking threads were supposed to go in Cafe Society.

Sports is something of an issue, since the Moderators fight each other over it. (“It goes in Cafe Soceity, I sure as hell don’t want it and I’m moving it!” “No way, it goes in General Questions, I’m moving it back!” “Damn, OK, maybe I can move it to MPSIMS and they won’t notice.” “Get it the hell out of here, I’ll move it to GD.” and so forth.)

OK, seriously, sports is somewhat like computers as a topic. Actual placement depends on the kind of conversation the OP is looking for:

  • Factual questions (“How many home runs did Hank Aaron hit against Cleveland?”) go in GQ.
  • Personal encounters (“Wow! I had second row seats at the Klambake-Frisco fight!”) go in MPSIMS
  • Opinions (“Soccer is so much more interesting than basketball”) go in IMHO
  • Flaming (“Damn the Yankees anyhow!”) go in the Pit.
  • Witnessing (“God loves the Cubs!”) goes in Great Debates.
  • And, I reluctantly admit, sports as entertainment goes in Cafe Society (“I hear they’re starting an All-Wresting Channel…”)

OK?

In the thread Annie-Xmas linked, I posted this possible revision:

’ “*Our salon for art, cooking, comics, drama, literature, movies, music, performers – all the artistic disciplines – if it’s about creativity, leisure or entertainment, it goes here.”

Bolding mine. The five added words would nicely update Cafe Society’s scope.*’

[ul][li]Whether it’s cookery, cooking or cuisine, there probably needs to be a term for the preparation of food.[/li][li]Adding comics is suggested in recognition of the vocal group of comic book geeks and cartooning aficanados in the forum. (Like me!) There’s been an ongoing weekly comics discussion thread for a couple years now, and any given week sees at least a half dozen new comics thread.[/li][li]Adding performers was my of lumping open mic poets, actors, athletes and even low key folks like garage bands and street performers in one group. I avoided specifying sports because it tends to end up all over the boards depending on the question. [/li]Adding the words creativity and leisure was an attempt to provide two more catch-alls for activities I hadn’t considered and to underscore a main point, that Cafe Society is an entertainment forum.[/ul]

NitPick: If by wrestling, you mean “Pro-Wrestling” then its not sports only entertainment. {Not that I consider it entertaining}

An excellent suggestion, Askia, many thanks. We’re still discussing briefly, and should have some decision shortly.

I concur with Askia. From the current description, I’d have thought cooking posts were off topic.

Seems like everything can fit comfortably under the more general rubric of arts, culture, and entertainment.

Fewer more general descriptors is better than a greater number of more specific ones IMHO.

I agree. I’ve been with the board for many years and still have to ponder where to put some posts. Possiblly there are some technical issues though.

If 'twere done when 'twas done, 'twere well 'twas done quickly. And so it has been.

Thanks, all, and especially Askia.

What about sports?

Hee. This should get me in good with the comic book fanboys, at any rate.

You’re welcome, and also thank you for considering my suggestion.

cricetus. See posts #7 and #8 on why I didn’t specify sports in my suggested revision.

You mean I should read a thread before I post in it? Sorry.

It’s been a good day for me on the SDMB:

I started a thread that got a change made.
I had Peter Jennings in the Celebrity Deathpool.
Only Mostly Dead mentioned me in a thread about the musical “Chess.”

Since the rest of my life is sucky right now, I have to take it where I can get it. Thanks, Dopers.
