Things our cat does not like

Achilles, our male cat, does not like:

[ul]
[li]For our newest cat to give him a good bite[/li][li]For that bite to become infected[/li][li]The side effects of the fever of the infection[/li][li]For his humans to notice that he’s Not Feeling Well[/li][li]To be grabbed, stuffed in a cat carrier, and hauled to the vet in the morning[/li][li]To find out that the vet is in surgery until that afternoon[/li][li]To be grabbed, stuffed in a cat carrier, and hauled to the vet AGAIN that afternoon[/li][li]For the vet to poke him all over[/li][li]For the vet to take his TEMPERATURE! [/li][li]For the vet to give him a great big shot of penicillin[/li][li]Having his humans hunt for him that evening, because he’s had ENOUGH of going to the vet for one day and just wants to chill out under the bed.[/li][/ul]

Fortunately, he’s not due for his pill until later on this morning. I’m sure that he won’t like taking pills, either, but he had a temp of 104 (I have no idea of what’s normal for a cat, but that doesn’t sound good) at the vet’s, and he’s GOING to take his pills.

He had been Not Feeling Well for a couple of days, and not eating, and not moving around much. Now, we’ll tolerate that in a cat for a day or so, but if we think he’s not gonna get over it, ESPECIALLY if he’s not eating, he goes to the vet. Twice in one day, if necessary. The vet says that we should see dramatic improvement in 24-48 hours. The vet also said he had an empty bladder and was not dehydrated, so he’s been drinking and peeing, just not when he’s had an audience. So THAT’S some good news.

Poor Achilles. Right now he’s under my bed, or more precisely, he’s up in the box compartment of the bed. He has had ENOUGH, he says. He was already feeling bad enough when he was taken to the vet’s, and he’s not taking any chances on more vet visits. I tell him that he’ll feel better very soon now, but he’s Not Talking to any of us humans, except to say that he hates the vet and is NOT coming out.

awwww

Has Achilles made this face at you yet?

Or is he just kind of mopey?

In any event, to try and cheer him (and you) up, here is a picture of a rabbit with a pancake on his head.

Hope things return to normal for all concerned asap.

Oolong!

Oolong rules. Everytime I look at that picture I laugh. Every single time.

I really can’t tell what faces, if any, Achilles is making right now. He’s holed up in the box spring area of the bed and Not Coming Out. All we can see of him are two glowing eyes reflecting the ray of the flashlight. I predict LOTS of fun in about four hours, when we need to give him his first pill. The first step is getting him out of the bed…

…also known as the Test of Wills, in primitive cultures it is sometimes used as a rite of passage…

Tell Achilles to quit acting like such a pussy.

It will have no effect at all on his behavior, but I find that most cats enjoy a good bit of verbal abuse. Then tell him some weird cat lady on the internet is sorry him’s not feeling good, yes she is, poor beautiful kitty.

Ahem.

He was bit on the ankle, yes?

A cat’s normal temperature runs in the 100.5º to 102.5ºF range. So the 104º, while not what you look for in a cat, isn’t brain-roasty. So there’s that.

Lynn I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but I’ve been thinking about your pussy for weeks.

Seriously, What is your newest kitty’s name? Has he told you yet? I need closure on this. I’m too lazy to search.
[/Hijack]

Why, pray tell, does that bunny have a pancake on his head?

I don’t know, but it’s my newest LJ icon!

At the risk of sounding sarcastic, have you tried shaking the tin of kitty treats? Has there ever been a more effective way to get a cat to come to you?

Lynn cats have tails for a reason you know! Seriously, when my Fat Boy goes up into the bedsprings, the only way I can get him is to grab his tail and pull. Not nice, but it’s the only way he’ll come out–and there are times he needs to be removed lest he turn into a kitty pancake.

Are you now missing the fabrinc covering over your box springs?

When I had to give my oldest cat, Snowy medicine shaking the tin of cat treats worked exactly twice before she associated the kitty treats with getting a pill shoved down her throat. To this day she will not come out for a kitty treat at night if I shake the tin though she will come out for a treat in the daytime when she believes it’s safe.

Good luck with your sick kitty Lynn and best of luck with the medication.

Achilles is feeling somewhat better now. He came out from under the bed on his own, and headed for the water dish and then the litterbox. He allowed himself to be picked up and fussed over for a bit. Then my daughter and I gave him his morning pill. I coated it in butter first, and had his mouth open and the pill down his throat before he knew what was happening. Surprise is always the best tactic in these circumstances, I believe. At any rate, he’s moving around on his own, and doesn’t seem to be so dazed as he was yesterday. He’s still rather mopey.

He is very odd in that he doesn’t like to eat anything but his cat kibble. He’ll SNIFF at things all day long, including chicken, tuna, kitty treats, jalapeno peppers, etc., but he won’t eat any.

He was named Achilles because he has a black spot on his ankle. He’s grey tabby and white, with rather long stockings in the back. The new kitty literally told us her name…she kept on saying “Meeer, meeeer, meer.” And she didn’t answer to Spike, which is what my husband called her, but she DOES answer to Mere. So that’s her name. She looks exactly like a Russian Blue. I’ve never seen that coat color before, and now I understand why it’s called blue.

Achilles IS a pussy, or wuss, or whatever. We have three cats, two females and Achilles. Both females will pick fights with Achilles and whup his butt, and make him go running to his Mama (my daughter). On the other hand, sometimes he picks fights with THEM, in which case they will again whup his butt and send him running off crying to his mom. My daughter bottle fed him for a couple of weeks after she adopted him, and so he really does regard her as his mother.

We’re all feeling a bit more cheerful now that he’s perked up a bit, and he wonders why all the strangers care about him.

Oh, and I too wish to know why bunnies wear breakfast breads as hats.

I didn’t want to hijack your thread, so I started this Oolong Appreciation Thread

I’m very glad to know that Achilles is doing well, and somewhat shocked to learn that your other cat is a Merecat. How did you ever get it into the country? :stuck_out_tongue:

:smack:

her… how did you get her into the country?

Our eldest male had an abcess  at the base of his tail from his new sibling (male, too) last year. He had to have surgery for the boo-boo, then meds for 2 weeks. That was fun! (NOT!)

Glad your sweetie is feeling better.

Willow would like to extend her empathies towards Achilles. Especially since she has discovered she does not like taking tetracycline in liquid suspension every eight hours for three weeks to treat a Hemobartonella infection that is causing hemolytic anemia with the added bonus of traipsing to the vet every few days to have blood drawn.

Me, I’m trying to figure out how to get tetracycline stains out of my jeans.

My husband found the Merecat hanging out at the local auto shop. He promised her that she could have all the food she could eat, and all the catnip mice she could kill, if she’d only come home with him. She has not divulged how she managed to get into this country in the first place.

Achilles is still mostly hiding out inside the box springs, but he emerges every now and then. He seems to be feeling better, as I stated earlier today. My daughter is pleased to know that so many people wish him well. I, personally, sympathize with Willow. Having blood drawn every few days gets really old after a while.
