This is a Google Maps hack which overlays all the subway lines on a google map of NYC. You can move around and zoom and search for addresses and click on the stations for info!
Infinitely more useful than MTA map which hardly shows any streets at all.
No. No no no no NO. What this is is just plain wrong.
Part of the initiation of every New Yorker is finding the subway station nearest a given address using maps that do not agree.
The subway is not just a mode of transportation: it is New York Basic Training. It is where you learn the ethos of the city: watching out for number one; learning to save minutes or even seconds; tolerance for people and things that are dirty or obnoxious or uncomfortable; and doing the best you can when those things and people will not cooperate with you, or each other.
There’s a reason the MTA didn’t do this themselves. It’s the reason they didn’t allow free transfers between buses and subways: New York is not supposed to be user friendly. To the extent it becomes user friendly, it loses something of its vital character.
Google Earth can do this for all metropolitan commuter lines. I’m not sure about being able to click on a station to get an address because I haven’t tried that.
Thanks so much! It even looks like its to scale. Now all we need is for them to put a little directional at the top of the post when you get above ground so I won’t be disoriented for 10 seconds about which way I’m facing.
