No thread on this movie? Who has been to see it? What did you think?
I took the kids to see it on Sunday afternoon and I thought it was pretty good; pretty much all of the Herbie movies have the same plot, i.e:
-Someone inherits rust-bucket herbie
-Herbie gets fixed up, owner discovers he’s ‘alive’ (nobody else believes this at first)
-Herbie surprises everyone by winning something
-Herbie gets smashed up and/or falls out with owner
-Herbie is repaired, reconciled with owner and wins the big race against all the odds.
-and this one is no exception, but I thought it managed to preserve most of the charm of the Herbie concept and the thing wasn’t completely sold out to over-the-top technical effects. Wasn’t really as comic as the older movies, but I liked it.
Somehow, I can’t bring myself to watch this one. I saw the Love Bug when it came out. (1968…woulda made me …6) I enjoyed it, and have wanted to rewatch the DVD with commentary for a while now.
Somehow, redoing it after all these years seems like one more instance of Hollywood having no fresh ideas, so they go looking through the back room for something to remake.
I guess they figure people under a certain age won’t have heard/seen the origional. Seems to work, too.
You mean like my three year-old daughter? That bitch - how dare she not see the original? Amazing that you could feel such an emotional response to a movie you haven’t seen in 35+ years and meant so little to you, you haven’t bothered to even purchase on DVD.
Anyway, for a non-whiny response, yes, we took our daughter and she fell in love with the movie and loves to point out all the “Herbies” she sees on the road (the only other movies that made as strong an impression on her as “Herbie” were “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Fantastic Four” (Fireguy is likely her first crush). She didn’t like the scene at all where Herbie was damaged, but was thrilled when Herbie won the big race in the end.
The movie was cute and followed, as the OP said, the Herbie formula to a T. Everybody did a fine job of delivering the material, though I kept expecting Cheryl Hines to act like her character in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
What bug is up your butt? DrMemory didn’t say or even imply that there is anything wrong with people that haven’t seen the originals, just that people under a certain age may not have seen the originals. Would you get pissed off if someone suggested that 3 year-olds might not have ever seen Steve Allen, Jack Paar or Johnny Carson host the Tonight Show?
I’m not going to get into the ongoing debate over whether remakes are ever a good thing, and whether their existence means that Hollywood has run out of ideas.
I WILL say, however, that I really enjoyed the movie. Lindsay Lohan, at least in her movies, is fun to watch, and I thought that the movie really captured the essence of the first one or two Herbie movies.
