Inspired by this and various other threads popping up around this board, I decided to start this one up to allow the guitar players in this community to share their music with the rest of us. Anything from a small sampling to a completed song (original or cover), and with or without a backing band. Anything from a searing solo to a slow blues tear-jerker. Whether your thing is Country, Jazz, or Classical I want to hear it. Anything you got, really.
Don’t be shy, and don’t make me start calling you out!
I’ll start us off with a couple of mine. You’re bound to get over your stage fright once you get a whiff of me butchering a classic or two, right?
My version of Panama complete with backing by the tribute band Atomic Punks. It’s in the mastering stage so I still have a little life to squeeze out of it, but it is the closest thing I have to ‘ready’. Believe it or not, the singer is not David Lee Roth. And believe it or not that’s me on the axe and not Eddie Van Halen! Well, it would be if you broke both of his hands, fed him six bottles of Nyquil and broke four of his strings.
My version of Lenny backed by Double Trouble! There’s a little noise on the track that I am currently looking to get rid of, lest I have to re-record and mix (please Og, no!). I don’t have to tell you that it’s not SRV on the Strat, do I?
So, what’cha got?
Note: For any of you having problems with a hosting location, let me know. I have some space and would be more than happy to accommodate you. Also, there’s nothing saying that we must limit this to just the guitar. You play an instrument? Share your talent! So now you have no excuses. Get those recorders spinning and those fingers moving!
Check your e-mail; I sent you a demo I did last year. Thanks for the offer to host it. It’s a 15-track demo I did after installing Adobe Audition last year, to check out the multitrack section. You can’t wail too much on acoustic guitar, but it doesn’t make me cringe, so I don’t mind if other people hear it. Hope you like it!
I do not play any instrument, am musically illiterate, and will not be participating. But I do think this is a great idea for a thread and I hope lots of people post clips of their music. Also, just to prove that what they say about chicks and guitar players is totally true, I wanted tell Euthanasiast that I think he’s cool.
P.S. You know in the part of “Panama” where not-David Lee Roth says things like “I can barely see the road from the heat comin’ off,” etc. And there’s a whooshing noise? Is that made by the guitar?
Actually, back in 2004 NoCoolUserName started a similar thread and called it: SDMB Guitarists: Put Up or Shut Up
I checked to see if NoCoolUserName’s link was still on the 'Net and it sure is.
You can hear him do a great rendition of “Hocus Pocus” by Focus.
You’ll notice I have a link there too and it is still active. I had forgotten about it and I never took it off my website. I’m glad I kept it so I can compete in the latest SDMB Battle of the Bands !!!
Ok, I’ll play though I am not quite finished with theses songs yet.
Here it is. need to finish figuring out what I am going to play then rerecord the whole thing. It’ll turn out better, just gotta find the time to finish recording and mixing it. About half of the solo track is doubled.
I also have this song which I have words for, alas I have no vocalist. I need to fix a bit of the intro solo then legthen the whole song.
Here is another thing that I need to find a vocalist for. It has violins! (which I may get rid of or rearrange) I also need to remix it as I mixed it with a scratch guitar track. I have a clean track.
I should have a couple heavy tracks to post tomorrow, just got to mix them down.
My band recorded some songs in our guitarist’s living room this summer; you can hear them on our Myspace site. I play bass and some guitars, and did the drum programming (since we didn’t have the microphones necessary to record live drums).
That is actually Eddie Van Halen’s Ferrari if I’m not mistaken. It was miked up outside the studio. I used to think it was a quick guitar slide with his guitar hooked up to some kind of processor, but nope, it’s just a Ferrari.
Euth - I was actually asking about your gear when I asked “what’cha got” not calling you out on your chops. But I guess I am glad for the different interpretation - it seems to have led to a cool thread!
Your stuff sounds good - care to share the story about how you ended up playing with both a VH cover band and, more importantly, Double Trouble? Sounds like you may have a story or two. Who else have you played with?
Your stuff sounds good. What amp are you playing through for Panama - a Mojave? How about your Strat - what type? And the tone on it? Nice n’ Blackface; interested when you get all bridge pickup-y in the middle bit and then switch back to neck.
I had some stuff on the old thread but the links don’t appear to be in place to the Doper’s site who had hosted my stuff previously. Can I send you a couple of unfortunately large files of my band?
My younger brother is the bass player in a band, and you can hear a couple of their songs here. He was a member of this message board for a while, but he dropped out of it.
None of them have quit their day jobs, as far as I know, but I think they sound pretty darn good.
Yeah, I know. I was just using that line to segue into this thread.
I wish! They’re actually backing tracks from the band, recreated and minus the guitar parts.
Lenny is played on a 50th Anniversary Fender Stratocaster (2004) plugged into a PodXTLive with the blackface model tweaked to closely match the original sound. I have actually recently acquired a SRV Fender Strat and was thinking about re-recording Lenny with that guitar because it is so much closer to his sound. I am working on Tin Pan Alley right now and the sound is perfect with that guitar! Panama was done on my Wolfgang plugged into my Peavey 5150 amp and miked.
Absolutely. Send it along and I’ll post it as soon as possible.
This probably isn’t the place for me to post my band’s clips; we just play 3 chord rock with no solos to speak of. I have some 2 year old demos linked in my sig. (The Wash. Post requires registration - it’s free and relatively painless).
I’m a little bummed that this thread is now instead of a couple of months from now, since we’re going to record some new songs very soon. We’ve moved along a bit, musically, since the first demos.
Euth - I will send you a track or two. Thank you for posting them.
Ah yes - the Peavey Wolfgang; beloved by Ed-heads everywhere. Man, did I go through a massive EVH phase as a young guitarist. Learned a lot during that time.
The POD sounds great - I tend to hate amp modelers, being the vintage-weenie-purist type myself, but I must say that it works for you.
Well, I don’t want to get into a two-way dialogue, but I gotta ask: what’cha got? Seriously, if you have some cool vintage gear, I bet that most Dopers who would find their way onto this thread would be interested.
I have two amazing amps (there is a great story I posted about finding the first amp - I just did a search and couldn’t find it…darn it!):
a Cornford Hellcat - a British handmade “boutique” amp that sounds Vox clean and Marshall crunchy via the two channels it has. One of the best amps I have ever had the pleasure to play…a really tight bass, with creamy, creamy mids (check out the tracks I have asked to have posted)…
a Bruno Tweedy 18 - Bruno is another handmade-kinda amp builder who is known for coaxing the best sounds out of classic designs. This amp is based on an old late-50’s Fender Tweed Deluxe and just sounds amazing, too - I get the best SRV and Setzer tones out of this thing. And slide on my Strat through this amp is sublime - bell-like, glassy and integrated…
I play 12-string guitar, piano and drums. All unplugged. I have no recording technology, no mikes, so there are no recordings of me. If you want to hear me, you’ll have to visit my house for a live performance. Hear it one time… it’ll never exist again. There’s something crushingly poetic about that…
An Arky - I clicked on your sig, when to the WP site and clicked on the first song (Rich Man?). It asked me to agree to rules, I did. Then it said I had to upgrade my Real Player and went online to find the files. THEN it said it couldn’t find the files.
So here I sit, not having listened to your band - I tried!
