Behind stately Mercotan Manor lay the fallow fields of Mercota, plus the 40 aker xmex-like woods. One of my kinsmen, an avid bowhunter and outdoorsman, set up a remote camera, triggered by motion, out in my woods, to capture the local wildlife. Having captured them, he emailed the photos to me.
I was rather disappointed that the local wildlife pictures were all actually of local wildlife (tho relieved that Mrs. Mercotan and I did not appear in the pics, because said kinsman didn’t tell us about the camera thingy right away), but I was also quite pleased with the abundance of local fauna captured in the photos.

Hey, it’s a deer!
Either a fox or a wallaby, but given our location, the smart money is on “fox”.
Oh man, you don’t know how much I wish I had a spot of land where I could put up a camera like this!! In our local outdoor magazine (GON = Georgia Outdoor News), the “Caught on Camera” shots have always been some of my favorites.
Fox. I’ve seen one of those walking down my sidewalk as if out for a neighborhood stroll. On a busy morning when plenty of humans were walking down same sidewalk, only to step off and give it “wtf?” looks as it sauntered past.
Oh, and that deer? Obviously wearing night-vision goggles. Beware, they’re planning something!
I was at a company golf outing, and for a few holes we watched a fox wander the course. At the 14th hole, he broke into a run, chased a squirell around a tree, and promply caught his lunch. An amazing site, even if that particular fox was a nasty looking thing.
Having a fox run over the top of the hill you’re sitting on (I was downslope, hunting), and running about 3 feet to your right and running away from you, is a right frightening thing.
On the deer being “up to something:”
I’m certain they intercept my e-mail, and are very aware of the hunting seasons. While moose hunting, I had a nice 8 point buck stand 15yds away, staring at me. Nothing I could do, it was not firearms season, and all I had with me was a .30-06. I knew I should have brought my bow with me that day! I’m also certain he was a scout for the moose. I found no moose on that trip.
the kitty close up was great. I live in suburbia so no chance of any deer/giraffe/whale sightings. But setting up a camera like that to catch the street cat activity might be fun. At one point we had street bunnies, too (Don’t tell Anya).
