I’ve done this privately for a few friends of mine and it was a lot of fun, so I thought I’d see if there was enough Doper interest to do something similar here. Basically, I provide a list of trivia/riddle/lateral thinking sort of questions, some of which are more task-oriented, some of which require a two-step process of 1) figuring out what I’m talking about and 2) doing some research to find the answer, and all of which are discoverable/discernable/available somewhere online. No question would require you to go anywhere illegal, do anything unethical, or spend any money. First person to answer a question correctly would receive points for it, and the winner would be the person with the most points when every question has been answered (or at the end of a specified time period). Winner gets a $20 Amazon.com gift certificate.
As an example, here’s one question I asked in my previous scavenger hunt: “Which was closer to burning a million pounds, a dead sheep or Tammy Wynette?” A little judicious googling reveals this page about the musical group The KLF, which describes how the group 1) recorded a hit single with Tammy Wynette in 1991, 2) brought the body of a dead sheep to the after-party of an awards show in February 1992, and 3) burned £1,000,000 on the Island of Jura in August 1994. So the answer would be Tammy Wynette.
I’ll play but I don’t understand the Tammy Wynette answer. The dead sheep was closer in time to the burning. Am I dense? Wait, don’t answer that. It’ll hurt my feeling.
Sounds like fun. When would it be? Or rather, when would it start? I’ll try to play. I’m not too good at riddles though.
On SkipMagic’s board we have a monthly scavenger hunt. The host provides twenty items, and players have to find a link to a picture, or citation, for the item. If someone has already provided a link, your own for that item must be a different one. Some questions have bonuses. Winner gets to host the next hunt! Come join us next weekend!
As it seems like there’s enough interest to do this, I’ll start the thread right now. No real rush, though: there are forty questions, and the winner will be the person with the most points when (a) all questions have been answered correctly, or (b) the thread goes a week without someone attempting an answer to a question.
Check the other thread (which should be up in the next few minutes) for the rules and questions and such.
And Baker, I’ll have to check out SkipMagic’s scavenger hunt. That sounds great.
