According to an article in Today’s (Tue, Apr 11) LA Times (link), Howard Stern’s ratings have plummeted since making the switch from broadcast radio to Sirius:
I thought Stern would lose considerable audience by moving to a subscription-only service, but I thought he had a larger legion of loyal fans who would make the jump with him.
I know there are Stern fans here on the Dope (I’m not one of them). What is the sound you now listen to in the morning?
I’m listening to a variety of things. Here in Cleveland, we have a couple of talk stations. I listen to two of them, one is local, the other has Bill Bennett’s syndicated show. I also listen to David Lee Roth, although sometimes his topics are dumb so I tune somewhere else. He did start off very poorly, but improved quite a bit. I suspect it’s only a matter of time before he gets the boot though from what management is doing to him.
I also have a large collection of CDs that I bring in the car, as well as an MP3 player I can hook up…
I also have some audio books I’ve been meaning to listen to, but haven’t gotten around to yet…
I used to wake up to Howard. My favorite part was the news, at the end of the show, which was on around the time I got up (10-ish).
Now I listen to a local station, WMJI, which is an Oldies station. I haven’t managed to catch much of their yakking in the morning, I sleep right through it. I think if I had to listen to it, I’d hate it.
I haven’t bothered to check out Roth. Truth is I don’t LIKE “shock jocks.” So I stay as far away from “Opie and Anthony” as I can. Perhaps this is why I can’t get out of bed until 10…heh
Being that I commute by motorcycle, I don’t listen to anyone on my ride to work. I do occasionally tune into Adam Carolla via the web feed when I can. Since he’s on the west coast and I’m on the east, his show starts at 8 am my time, which is about the time I’m waking up.
I used to listen to Stern for my 30 minute ride to work, but it’s not worth it to subscribe for 30 minutes a day. So I tend to bounce between channels a bit, including David Lee Roth (which sucks so bad, I’m actually just listening in the hopes that I’ll hear him say or do that one thing that finally makes the station can his ass), and classic rock, and the local Jack station, and often I turn off the radio and just do without all the morning chatter.
I half expected to hear more about Stern and the things he was doing on air, and was expecting to envy those that shelled out for the monthly subscription, but other than recent reports about his low listenership, I haven’t heard anything. Which makes me think that I’m not really missing anything.
I lucked out with my timing. I had some Christmas cash that I was going to spend on my Sirius system…all set to make the move to follow Howard. I went to work, planning on heading to Best Buy when I get home. That day, I was informed that I’d start telecommuting – no more hour drive in the morning.
Diamond Dave, for about ten to fifteen minutes at a time, if he’s got someone good on. If he’s giving off deadly waves of… it’s not stupid. It’s pure concentrated ego. Man has no ability to even conceptualize people that don’t think exactly like he does… then Q104.3 for classic rock, followed by 102.7 for classic rock, followed reluctantly by Jack-FM. (I am still pissed)
Often, my iPod. You know, Sirius is much cheaper than I thought. I’m seriously thinking about getting it.
I listen to Adam Carolla on my way to work. He can’t bring in anything close to even B-list guests, other than stand up comedians… David Alan Grier seems to be on atleast once a week. But some of the bits are very funny. Oswaldo the Guatamalan laborer’s movie reviews always make me laugh (Oswaldo is an old friend of Adam’s who has a THICK accent and only a rough use of English) and Deaf Frat Guy makes me lose my shit.
Being in a cable van all day, I switch between NPR and sports talk (Also WDFN - Detroit) in lieu of Howard. I can’t stand Rover (the syndicated replacement 97.1 picked up to replace Howard) and tend to have explosive diarrhea whenever Drew and Mike (the local a-holes on WRIF) are within earshot.
My girlfriend talked me into trying Elliot in the Morning on DC101. Sometimes he has decent guests, but most of the time they suck. For example, he seems to have a hardon for the people on that new show Freddie, and keeps having them on. I couldn’t give two shits about that show if I tried, so I’ll switch to the Sports Junkies if he gets on my nerves that much. Worse case scenario, I have a couple CDs I can always switch to.
In answer to the OP, the David Lee Roth show.
Not half as good, but I suspect he’ll fail.
It’s fun to listen to him try to make a go of it. Neat guy, but… I dunno.
Another Junkies listener. I’m up in PA though so I listen once I pick up the signal on my way in, and then online once I’m at work. I get NO reception in my building.
I’ve been listening to Adam Corolla a bit… I’ve only been doing the getting up in the morning thing for a short while.
I rarely/never listened to lovelines, and the impression I got from him on TV was that he was painfully unfunny… but he actually can be pretty funny sometimes. Quick mind.
Dear Friends;
Howard has two stations on Sirius. As of a couple of weeks ago, on one of the channels, Howard has switched to basically replaying his daily show several times during the course of a day. You no longer Have to listen in the morning. When I moved from LA six years ago, I lost my Howard. I wouldn’t have subscribed to Sirius, if it hadn’t been for being able to once again have my daily fix, but I have to tell you, Sirius is great! Local radio in this area sucks large chunks. I find myself listening to radio much more, and watching TV Much less than I did. Well worth 50 cents a day.
He wasn’t that good on TV, but was brilliantly funny on Loveline. Like you say, very quick mind. Since he got his own show, Loveline now sucks and I think Adam isn’t as good as he used to be, but has his moments. Seems the real star of Loveline was the interaction between Adam and Dr. Drew.
