What "real" wealth is all about; "authentic Indian cuisine" (Winston Smith in UK)...

On wealth…

I am in the shadow of Windsor Castle in the town of the same name. It strikes me that I did not have a true understanding of “wealth” prior to seeing this historic site.

I am truely in awe. My entire frame of reference for personal wealth has changed. Pictures DO NOT do this justice.

I’m in the wrong business.

On Indian Cuisine…

I explained to my gracious hosts that I would like to sample authentic Indian cuisine. Hot! Excellent.

My horizons are broadening as we speak! Holy shit!

More later

I am so glad you’re having a great time! I have never tried Indian food–I keep meaning to, but fear of eating at a bad restaurant keeps me from exploring.
How’s the weather there? We had great weather–only one day of rain. Spring seems prettier with castles as a backdrop, somehow.

I “tossed the dice” and I’m eating at the place my driver recommended. The meal is medium-hot, but there are green chiles in it so the diner can control the heat. I just ate two, and there’s a five alarm fire I’m my mouth the the flat bread and my John Smith’s Bitter isnkt even putting a dent in.

The weather is similar to Boston. Right now it’s about 8 to 10 C and overcast - a few rain drops when I was walking around earlier, but not now.

I hope the thread title isn’t misinterpreted - I don’t want anyone to think that I think true wealth is all about eating Indian cuisine in Windsor.

I’d disagree and say that true wealth is eating a really good curry.

Shame on you eleanor for visiting this island and avoiding our national dish. Even a bad curry is better than most fast food. Mmmm. Want curry.

Double shame on you, rigs, for not trying Indian merely because you’re afraid of a bad experience! Why, if we applied that to everything in life, we’d be curled up under our beds whimpering. As your fellow MMPer I *order * you to go out and try some!

shrugs It’s only a model.

Seriously though, it’s good to know you’re enjoying yourself. Ahh, a curry and a pint of bitter…

I am sorry to disagree with you, sir, but you are mistaken. Curry can be stored in small earthenware pots, whereas the Queen of England inhabits the largest (inhabited) castle in Europe (or so I’m told).

Uh, plus a bunch of other places.

Yeah.

Is she in residence at the moment? You can tell by the royal flag flying on the top of the main tower (though it might not be strictly honest these days, what with Al Qaeda knocking about). What makes it more annoying is that Windsor is merely the weekend home. The pied-a-terre is of course Buckingham Palace, but there’s Glamis, and dozens of others. Bastards.

Indeed. I hear the actual residence it’s based on overflows into D5.

But–how do you know I am not?
I don’t (and didn’t) want to spend my vaca with the trots, so no curry/Indian food. That is how my stomach responds to new food. Between jet lag, 3 kids and a husband trying to pub crawl his way through England, I had enough on my plate!
I wouldn’t mind trying some–I bet I would like some of it. I just don’t like hot spicey food…(see picky eater thread in IMHO). I have no idea what to order or what I order is.

Anyway–good on you, Winny ! Have you gone on the Tube yet? Down to Trafalgar Square (which is under scaffolding)? Or are you staying in Windsor proper for the whole time?

I now eat my fries with malt vinegar–does that help?

I’ll get in the MMp later and give some suggestions.

Had nobody told him that it’s illegal to not conclude a pub crawl with a post-midnight curry feast?!

I am staying in Slough till Friday, then I’m chacking out and spending the weekend in London proper. I didn’t want to spend the week looking forward to the weekend, so made a strategic trip to Windsor. Good thing, too. Beautiful it is. And as far as “pub crawling”, let’s just say John Smith is an excellent travelling companion.

Windsor Castle isn’t about wealth, it’s about power. Think about a medieval army attacking it. Buckingham Palace, OTOH, is about wealth.

I’ve lunched well at The Sir Christopher Wren in Windsor. A pub that served me good food is one a bit up Castle Hill (third building up IIRC). I can’t recall the name but it’s got a very small frontage.

And Windsor has a decent theatre, a bit further down the high street from the castle, although it’s been 10 years since I’ve been there.

Ah, see, the official national dish of Britain is chicken tikka masala, which isn’t hot in the least (lightly spiced tomato puree and yogurt/cream). You can also try korma (no chilli at all - almonds and cream) and pasander (almonds and fruit).

Buckingham Palace? Blimey, gov, that wasn’t there yesterday! [Someone else can supply the joke now that I revealed the punchline]

Windsor, yes; London, yes; but Slough? I though John Betejeman said the last word on it:
“Come friendly bombs, and fall on Slough…”. Why the unusual itinerary? (My deepest apologies to any Sloughites on the board).

Of course, if you want a taste of real Britain, ask for a pint of Real Ale at any local pub. Noticing the American twang (you do have an American twang, right?) the happy innkeep will be glad to serve you a pint of this delicious beverage, the genuine English tipple of choice! You may want to ask for a spoon. Or, possibly, a knife.

I’ll see Buckingham Palace this weekend. I’ll agree with you beforehand, though - I’m certain you are correct (and ver astute regarding my observation and frame of reference)

I think I had a pint at that Pub, though I don’t recall the name either. I walked past the theater you mention on my way out and back. I also had a pint at the Three Tuns. FUN.

I find it highly amusing that Britian’s own cuisine is so inedible that they’ve borrowed the national cuising of one of their former colonies.

Dammit, now what am I going to do with my plane tickets?
