She seemed to have encouraged people in Rwanda to kill one another. Sister Theophister also seems to have tossed patients out of her hospital into the hands of the death squads. Others she refused to feed.
How many Hail Marys do you think genocide gets you?
She was hardly the only “Christian” worker who took part, either - there were plenty of priests and nuns involved. At least one priest even offered his church as a refuge to the Tutsis and then informed the Hutus, who commenced to slaughtering them wholesale.
Oh, I dunno. Depends on where you go looking for news.
As to the nun in question, as well as the other “religious” people involved, it almost makes me wish that I believed in hell. The crap that was done in Rwanda is just sickening.
Depends on whether you have any inside info on the priest granting absolution.
Nazi Germany had chaplains assigned to the concentration camps, to minister to the SS guards there. (Presumably, their sermons didn’t talk much about Jesus’s mother and the religion he was brought up believing.)
Those chaplains were mainly Lutheran, rather than Catholic, if that makes any difference.
I am assuming that this woman was Hutu, taking a bit of revenge. If so, then I assume that her own life was never in danger from the rebels. In which case, you cannot argue that she was trying to save her own life by appeasing the bad guys (for which we would probably forgive her, or at least not charge her). I don’t think we judge as harshly people who do terrible things when faced with a life or death choice.
Everyone who uses violence in the name of Christianity, a big fat two-fisted FUCK YOU. Don’t even say the word Christian to me now, I’m totally going to vomit.
Not at all. Both make the larger group look like shit (especially to an under-educated audience), whether or not the larger group explicitly taught what was done.
Slight side question for everyone: How many of these nuns and priests are there just for the job? How many do you think are true believers in the Church versus the ones who are there for the meals, board, and income?
As BlackKnight has observed, that is not really relevant.
While it is true that religious people through history have fallen into the habits of their culture in contradiction of their purported religious beliefs, that does not excuse anything. The church should definitely be taking steps to defrock any priest and expel from his or her order any religious person who engaged in these practices (allowing them to enter a penetential order, perhaps, after they have served any prison time to which they are sentenced). The church should also be condemning the actions in the harshest terms and, (in cases such as the priest mentioned above), perhaps offering reparations.
If the church wishes to claim credit for having inspired truly generaous acts, it should accept responsibility for failing to inspire acts that would mitigate (preferably prevent) actions such as the Rwanda massacres.
What the fuck is that s’posed to mean? Far be it for me to defend anyone of the Catholic…bent. But what exactly do you accuse Mother Theresa of? Genocide? Harboring people in her church to be killed later? Put up (a cite) or shut up!. Asshole.
Here’s a cite, if6was9. There are plenty of people who think Mother Theresa was a really bad person, although even conniving with murderous kleptocratic regimes falls a long way short of participating in genocide IMHO.
