'Embolden' (weak)

Stupid bushisms. It might be a real word. It might be in the dictionary. It might be used by the sheep media. But I hate that freakin’ word, because it sounds so stupid. Before W got into office, people used the word ‘encourage’.

Embolden.

Can I start saying ‘emsheepen’? Cause anyone who follows these stupid trends is subject to just that. Emsheepening. Fucking lemmings.

So, you’re angry at Bush for using a common word correctly?

What an incredibly stupid rant.

Agreed. Weak rant.

It’s perfectly cromulent; though I prefer embiggen.

Thirded. I also heard it used on a number of occasions long before Bush got into office

This is the worst Pit thread I’ve seen in a long, long time. You suck, born too late. Seriously. If you don’t think to yourself “man, I really suck” at least several times a day, you should start. Because you do.

Here’s a cite that claims usage in the 15th Century. Not the oldest word around, but I’d say it’s made its bones.

No, I’m twitched because out of all the other words that he’s made up (and that other people then feel it’s alright to say), he managed to get one right. And even though no one has used it since the 1800’s , now it’s all over the place. Anyone could have said it, but only he had the hubris to make it a buzzword. It sounds just as stupid as ‘misunderestimated’. If Clinton had said it I’d probably be just as pissed. Sorry to insult your buddy, Miller.

Suck my balls, Giraffe, you tool.

Unsurprisingly, you suck at insulting people.

You might consider the gap between what you know, and what actually exists. Embolden is a fine word, an elegant word actually. It is in common usage. That you are ignorant of it suggests a deficiency in your formal education that you would be wise to address.

Maybe you and Giraffe hang out at the same Renaissance conventions, Contrapuntal, but I don’t play Dungeons and Dragons, so I don’t hear a lot of people saying embolden or maiden or codpiece very often.

Did you check dictionary.com? The problem with this sort of pitting — and I’ve pitted this sort of pitting before — is that it gives Bush-is-persecuted conspiracists fuel. You’re so caught up in how he pronounces words and how he smiles with a smirk and how dumb he is that you are distracting people from what he is really doing that needs pitting. Shit like penning his own legislation. Like interpreting the Constitution how he pleases, including basically calling it bullshit on a stick. Like snooping into people’s private affairs, advocating a marriage amendment, and the goddamn Patriot [sic] Act.

Very few things on the SDMB actually make me laugh out loud, but this one did. I will definitely start using it as a description of what Bush & Co are trying to do to the public discourse.

Maybe you and I have time to go to computer nerd festivals and learn how to look things up, but that’s not how born too late rolls. While you’re all concerned about your “facts”, he’s out there pimpin’. He’s so awesome.

Let me make my point a little more clear. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT HEARD OF SOMETHING DOES NOT MEAN IT DOES NOT EXIST. You fucking idiot. Do you even read what you write? “Maiden” is a foreign word to you? Once you get into Jr. High the English courses get a lot tougher. You might want to do a little extra-curricular (not in the course of study) reading or you will find yourself woefully (sadly) behind.

Damn. I will assume I’m being whooshed.

I acknowledged that it may be in the dictionary in the OP, but I also implied that it didn’t matter in my rant. I hadn’t considered that it would affect anyone so strongly (hence the ‘weak’), Liberal, but the proof is in the rabid response here by Giraffe and Miller. I agree that Bush is guilty of more heinous crimes, but I was primarily commenting on the dumb language trend.

Listen, you abominable little turd, the fact that you’ve led such a narrow, sheltered little intellectual life that you’d never heard the word “embolden” before it tumbled out of the mouth of the first illiterate to ever hold the office of president does not mean the word is rare or unused. Anyone who has a vocabulary that is not derived entirely from dialogue overheard in a Mountain Dew commercial would be aware of the existence of this particular word, and those that were not, would most likely have the sense to quitely add it to their repetoire, rather than publically proclaiming that they’re dumber than George Motherfucking Bush. And, in case you haven’t picked up on it yet, I’m not criticizing you because I’m any fan of Dumb George. I’m criticizing you because I’m a big fan of the English tongue, and it pains me to hear screaming, sub-ape imbeciles like yourself declaim on what the proper state language is, when it is instantly clear that the closest they’ve ever come to a dictionary was when they were savagely beaten with one about the head and shoulders as a young child. Which fate, on reflection, clearly explains the massive impairment you have demonstrated in this thread.

Yeah, that Miller was drowning in his own spittle there, wasn’t he? What is he, off his meds or something?
