Survivor: Fiji - Ep. 1: "Something Cruel Is About To Happen ... Real Soon"

Ladies and gentlemen! Tonight! CBS! 8pm! Another season of Survivor! Whoo hoo! You’re all invited to my house for popcorn and heckling. A little teaser of things to come, from CBS.com:

And some more detailed information, from our friends at TV Guide (spoiler boxed, because while there is nothing here that hasn’t already been seen on the Internets, some people might not have seen this already):

The 14th edition of the reality series strands 19 castaways on the Fiji Islands to vie for the $1 million first-place prize. Initially, everyone lives together at a camp that has plenty of supplies, but on the third day the group is split into two tribes. The team that loses the first immunity challenge must relocate to a different island with little resources. Also, a hidden immunity idol is located at each tribal camp.

You guys, I’m so excited! And as always, I hope there are monkeys! But it looks like there might be some actual, interesting people this time, which is almost as good. Whee!

Ooh, two hidden immunity idols? That should make for fun! I just hope the haves/have nots thing isn’t done as dreadfully as on the Apprentice this time around!

Thanks for the tread Rockle. I have been looking forward to this season since the end of the last. Finally here. W00t! as you youngsters say.

Did anyone besides me see the TV Guide Channel special (hosted by Yul) about this new season of Survivor? They didn’t give a whole lot away, but they did explain why there are 19 castaways this time, and we got a nice introduction to the new contestants. Again … looks like there are some really cool people in this bunch. Yaaaaaaaay!

This looks interesting - I’m there!

(Thanks for putting this up - would have completely missed it.)

I’m trying to figure if I’m going to make any effort to watch this.

Really pisses me off that nearly every single show my family watches is on Thurs night. Instead of jumping thru hoops and trying to get everything recorded, I’ve found it easier to just stop watching certain shows. With very few exceptions, I’d rather watch a show with a family member (if that show is at all watchable).

No one else in my family really cares for Survivor as much as I do (or did in the past). Or at least everyone has another show (or 2) that they would rather watch at the same time.

The Tivo is programmed and ready to go, in case I forget between now and then. Looks like they’re ringing some interesting changes on this batch of [del]suckers[/del] contestants.

I feel your pain. I started watching “Ugly Betty” in the “Survivor” off-season, and I’ve been watching “My Name Is Earl” since it premiered, and now I have this giant ugly TiVo conflict mess. Since “Survivor” and “Earl” came first, they win due to seniority – but fortunately, I can get “Betty” episodes online. CBS did the same thing last year with “Survivor,” so you may still be able to watch on tape delay, if you want. And if not, you’ll still always have us.

Interesting changes? Say on, kind sir.

rockle listed some in his spoiler in the OP. It is also my understanding that:

This time, immunity idols must be played before the voting in Tribal Council.

Which alters the standard strategies completely!

Why am I doing this to myself? Why is the Tivo set and ready (since I gave up on Smallville and now don’t have to watch Survivor live)? I just know I’m going to regret it and it’s going to be several hours of my life that I will never get back.

Oh … that’s right. There might be monkeys.

On a positive, you can watch entire Survivor episodes online at the CBS site. Easy enough to catch up during the week if you miss an episode.

Yeah, if that is correct, and I have no reason to doubt you, that changes everything.

There was some confusion early on about HiDef for this show, but it looks like no HD broadcasting this time. My understanding is that CBS will show the next season in HD. It’s about freakin’ time! How nice that would have been last time on the Cook Islands-- I think that was the most picturesque setting yet.

I like the idea of placing the IIs in the camps instead of on Exile Island-- makes them that much harder to find and keep secret.

I won’t care about HD until I actually get a set that handles it, but I know what you mean. So much is being broadcast in HD, like our local news, that Survivor should be. I did think that Palau was prettier, though.

With the IIs in camp we get the possibilty of another Judd like moment when he tells his teamates the idol is in trees and gets caught looking for it on the ground. (Or was it the other way?)

Just an hour away!

Yes, I did, but … I’m a girl!

I was so sure you were a girl that I did not even notice. Bad silenus!

:o  :frowning: :smack:

I loved the definition of “askew”–“not orthogonal”.

Gee, if someone doesn’t know what askew means, are you sure they’ll recognize orthogonal?

(Although I’ve been guilty of similar definitions, and then needed to explain more big words.)

I thought askew just meant not parallel, or not lined up right. Orthogonal means perpendicular. I would not define askew as “not orthogonal”.

BTW, where are you getting this from?
