R.I.P. Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain;

Why the early bird gets the worm;

Life isn’t always fair; and

Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer first aid cream, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student.

Common Sense lost the will to live as churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I’m A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Frankly, who needs boring Mr. Common Sense when you have Injury Lawyer, Esq.?

I received that email about a year ago. It’s amazing how many people think all that stuff listed in the email is just fine.

Sorry for my lack of tears for Common Sense but there were times he could be a stuffy old curmudgeon. He did lead a long life. Wasn’t it Common Sense who stated for centuries that the Earth was the center of the Universe? Heck just look outside. The Sun, the Moon and everything else moves around Earth, making Earth the extremely important #1 location that it is.
Common Sense also insisted the Earth was flat. Well isn’t it? Look North South East or West - sure looks flat to me. Walk in any direction and heck it still stays flat. (Do NOT try this at home, walk too far and you’ll fall off the edge of the Earth and you’ll lose your life and your special place in the Universe of being the center of everything).
Common Sense also didn’t like evolution at all (and still didn’t right up to his death). It’s just a “theory” right? Plus can you see evolution happening? No of course not. No one can. After all, the Universe was created just for Mr Common Sense and if he couldn’t see it, then it didn’t exist.
And for someone suffering from hypothermia, give them lots of alcohol to warm them up. That’s what Dr Common Sense says.
Mr Common Sense also insisted “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, yelled “get a horse” to all them there autmobile drivers and rightfully yelled at Robert Fulton about his “folly”.
Yes, the majority of times Commomn Sense offered good, sound advice but there were times when his status quo, don’t rock the boat attitude was a serious impediment to progress.

Common sense is a con man. Good riddance.

Too often was he used to make otherwise stupid people feel superior to smarter people merely because the smarter people lacked a particular skill or talent than the stupider one.

Ah, give me Elite Academia anyday.

Mostly, these days, I’ve seen ‘common sense’ used by people to refute evidence, as in ‘Why should I provide a cite when common sense tells you that Adam and Eve had pet dinosaurs’.

Are you aware of the actual circumstances of that incident? Not such an outrageous lawsuit as it appears at face value.

To begin with, the coffee caused a 79 year old woman third degree burns over 6 percent of her body. She had to get skin grafted on her genitalia and spent 8 day in the hospital. Initially she just wanted $20,000 to cover medical costs, but when McDonald’s refused a lawsuit was filed. It was discovered that McDonalds had about 300 cases of people getting severely burned by their coffee, and had been repeatedly warned about the dangerous temperature, but they refused to do nothing about it. We’re not talking “hot coffee” here, we’re talking, “Dangerously hot instant destruction of skin tissue” hot.

Having said that… I too, respectfully mourn common sense.

If anything kills Common Sense, it will be glurge like the OP.

Common Sense was okay, but his identical twin brother, Prejudice, was a total bastard.

Common sense has been re-named. I think someone around here has the appropriate username

Sheesh, no wonder my ears were burning this morning.

Thank you for posting this reply! It drives me insane when people quote this case as evidence of how “out of control crazy” our society became. If people knew the facts of this case, they wouldn’t be so quick to judge.

But that’s only common sense right?

Shoot.I was gonna pick Mr.Sense in the Death Pool, but picked Doyle Brunson instead. What was I thinking :smack:

Hasn’t this been happening on and off for well over a thousand years? That’s a long ilnnesss.

Yup! :stuck_out_tongue:

This is the most disgusting thing I’ve read in a while.

“Common sense” is just an excuse for forcing one’s prejudice on others without any logical argument or evidence. It’s an excuse for being a bigot (e.g. “Marriage is between a man and a woman; it’s just common sense.”) Common sense should have died when we invented more functional guidelines such as “rule of law” and “the scientific method.”

Well, dissecting and commenting on glurge (as well as other annoyances of the Internet) is a common practice here at the SDMB, but simply posting the glurge without comment (or attribution) isn’t a habit we want to encourage here, Canadjun. If anyone wants to start a new thread debating the, uh… merits of the “common sense” piece, feel free to do so.
