Calling all Eve Online players!

I’ve been playing for a couple weeks now, and I’m loving it. A search reveals that there are (or were) at least a few other players here, but the last mustering thread was a year ago and hardly got any responses. So, come on, all you space geeks, say something!

My character is Tyramatus, of the Sebiestor tribe of the Minmatar nation. So far I’ve been specializing in Engineering and Industry skills, and I have a small ammo manufacturing business going.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m going on about, Eve Online is a space-based Massive Multiplayer Online game. It’s somewhat more difficult and complex than most MMOs, which tends to weed out the obnoxious idiots. I like it because you can customize the crap out of your spaceships, the economic model is really sophisticated (the market uses Donchian channels to show trends; I never even heard of a Donchian channel before!), and it’s less about how many skills your character has as it is about how well you use what you have.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go mine some scordite ore so I can refine it and make a run of EMP Medium ammo.

I was one of the players in past threads but I just don’t have time anymore. It’s a great game and if I have time and disposable income I’ll most likely sign back up but not right now.

Enjoy the game!

Oddly, I left WoW (Eonar) a long time ago after getting tired of the juvenility and took up Eve, which I played for about a year. Then I got tired of trying to make a Kredit, and picked WoW back up. Now I’m doing both. Eve pilot “Ridtha”, a pretty well-balanced guy with a battleship, Industry V, a mining barge, and an Iteron V. Let me know if you need anything.

I’m an ex-Wow player in EVE myself. I like the fact that there’s only one server so you don’t have to find the right server to play with friends.

I’m playing Nikiloi, in a Thrasher right now and planning on getting a Stabber in the next few days. Omniscient, my corp is heading out to 0.0 space in a couple of days, but I still need to work on my training before I want to head out there. I’ve been focussing on the projectile weaponry bonuses of Minmitar ships with Arty and Autocannons equipped on my Thrasher. Being part of a corp helped a lot as they gave me tons of advice.

Oh, and Sturmhauke, Nikiloi is Sebiestor as well.

Another EvE player here, playing as an Amarr called “Loash”.

If you have just started playing sturmhauke there are a couple of good tools out there that might be of interest to you…

EvEMon, which lets you set up a training plan for your character (so you know what time you will need to change your training and see how long it will take you to fly x ship or use x piece of equipment).

QuickFit, which lets you set up ships out of game.

Both useful tools but EvEMon is probably the best and really helps.

My character is pure combat and I prefer flying small ships…Corp is moving to 0.0 soon and it’s a running joke in the corp that I refuse to train for battleships…so it’s going to be a fleet of battleships with a tiny interceptor charging ahead looking for trouble.

Fly safe!

I’ve been playing EVE for a couple of years now, specialising in Minmatar ship/weapons. I spent most of my first year in Empire, collecting (and spending) ISK. Trading, missions and whatever else caught my eye.

Then my corp decided to try it’s hand at 0.0 living. It had been our goal for a long time and we had a couple of friends that had already made the transition. To make a long story short, I loved it, been there ever since. Sure we’ve lost our space (twice now) and seen our initial alliance fall to a superiour force, but we’ve never stopped having fun.

I let my account expire a month ago. The lag in large scale alliance warfare was having a demoralising affect and my alliance had just lost it’s space and was disbanding. It seemed like the right time for a break, heh. I will definetly be going back once I get a more powerful computer or the servers become more stable. I’ve had enough of alliance vs alliance fleet fights for a while, I never want to see another POS again.

I was a member of UK Corp - originally in The -5- alliance, then co-founders of Lotka Volterra and now I believe we’ve moved to FATAL alliance in order to help BoB defend it’s borders (a lot of our old friends are in FATAL too).

MJinks, interesting to see people’s view of zero space. The corp I’m in is due to be moving to zero shortly (on Monday in fact) and I have some similar concerns about moving down there. I have specialised my character for small ships (Inties and AFs) and despite having reasonable skills (8M) I refuse to even learn to fly battleships, mostly because I don’t find the slow ships fun. What you mentioned above highlights some of my concerns, basically I don’t want to sit in some huge fleet just firing at some POS that I can hardly see.

I might have to consider the “YARR” route instead

EvE is an amazing game, I’ve never seen anything with the complexity that this game has, nor the depth, but you can find yourself getting dragged down a route you don’t want to go if you aren’t careful.

Wow, I pick up the trial less than a week ago and lo and behold an Eve thread pops up on SDMB. I love you guys…

I’m Minmatar right now, still trying to figure out the ropes, but so far I definitely prefer the combat route to the trading. It seems to be more profitable, at least at the lower levels.

The name I made up is kinda random, so I can’t remember it at the moment, I’ll post it later. Anyone who wants to help out a newbie is very welcome

Also a long-time EVE player here (hmm, I think I just had my 4 year anniversary)- Minmatar/Sebeistor named Vika Dracis. I’m taking a bit of a hiatus at the moment, though I log in every week or so for skill and blueprint checks.

If you’re a new Minmatar character (why yes, I am a roleplayer) EVE-mail me (and identify yourself as being from the Dope!) and I can help set you up with some tech 1 ships and supplies, and I can probably answer questions you might have (especially on industry/science/research.)

Some people find huge fleet fights fun, my computer just couldn’t handle it though. My first T2 Tempest was destroyed before I even had a chance to see the guy shooting me. Eventually I resigned myself to a scouting role, even though I had spent most of my time training Gunnery/Battleship support skills.

Towards the end of Lotka Volterra’s ‘defence’ we were losing our space fast, we formed up for one last grand fight to defend our capital ship yards (with a Titan in production). We had a record number of defenders guarding the only jumpgate in to the system. The attackers had superiour numbers and were able to send waves in to the system. The Goons went in with their armada of Frigates/Cruisers and the system crashed, allowing the guys in Battleships to jump through while the defenders were all rushing to log back on. I don’t believe it was intentional but it was definetly an alliance-ending moral hit.

Then there have been times where a node crash has helped us. I recall a couple of times where our POS were being sieged and a node crash restored their shields to full, giving us more time to mount a defence.

It just seems that too often it’s server load or questionable mechanics that determine the outcome of fights/wars. It gets to you after a while.

Still, even after all that, I still think that PvP is EVE is the most fun. You’re actually fighting for something, you can look back and see the progress (or lack thereof) you’ve been making. The in-game political scene reminds me of my time on the Siege Perilous shard on Ultima Online. You have to be careful who you ally with and face the consequences of your actions. If there was one thing I could change (besides lag) it would be alts. I think each person should only be allowed one character, although this is usually exploited by people paying for multiple accounts.

Anyway… There are quite a few 0.0 corps/alliances that have nothing to do with sovereignty or POSs. I imagine they tend to base out of NPC stations though. You might even enjoy large fleet fights if your computer can handle them (still expect server lag though).

I decided from the very start to specialise with one race. I joined a year or two after release and decided that would be the best way for me to ‘catch up’ to the older players. I have Minmatar BS level 5, along with most of the support skills, and advanced gunnery skills at level 4. While it was tempting to train for a Raven/Scorpion (and now the excellent Rokh!) I managed to somehow resist. I’ve gained a certain respect and pride in my Minmatar heritage.

If/when I go back I would probably look to join an alliance like Ushra’Khan (Minmatar RP). They have some territorial claim, medium scale warfare, total respect between enemies and most importantly they seem to be having a hell of a lot of fun. I’ve wanted to join them in the past but loyalty to my old corp has held me back.

The YARRR route sounds fun but it just doesn’t fit my style.

Fleets shouldn’t be entirely Battleships anyway. Admittedly I haven’t participated in many (read: any) fleet battles, my understanding is that you want light, fast ships as tacklers, to keep the enemy at bay so your bigger ships can do their stuff. It’s very difficult for heavy ships to hit Interceptors.

I’ll now discredit my wisdom on that score by admitting I never went into 0.0 space. :stuck_out_tongue: Started as a Caldari combat pilot, but eventually worked into mining for the necessary cash. My corp never got very big, as it was made up of just a few friends, so we didn’t have the resources for full-scale mining. I got to Cruiser 5 JUST for the +100% bonus to mining yield to my Osprey. Stuck to 0.8 space in a low-traffic system, and I could make a couple million in Scordite just by idle-mining.

I’m letting my subscription lapse, though. As fun as EVE is, other hobbies are grabbing my attention too easily, and without a large, active corporation, there doesn’t seem to be much point to doing stuff.

Smaller ships definetly have their places in a small/medium fleet. While I always flew a Tempest on fleet ops; I prefered my Stabber for simple roaming gangs. I defy a man to fly a well fit Stabber and not fall in love.

Large/huge fleets usually have a bunch of highly coordinated Covert Ops pilots as scouts, a handful of Interdictors to ‘tackle’ and almost everybody else in a Battleship (or Capital). Large fleet fights usually take place at 150-250km, with everybody aligned and ready to warp out as soon as they start taking damage.

But then I haven’t been playing lately and it seems more and more people are jumping into Carriers and Motherships. With the increase in Fighter spam perhaps Cruisers/Assault Cruisers are more welcome as support ships in even the largest fleets.

Just reactivated my account a month ago, still a newbie with 1.5 million SP. My original time playing, I went out into 0.0 space way too early and just got frustrated and broke being chum for the PvP people.

I’ve decided to just monkey around in Empire space, make money and skill points, and do a more slow and careful transition over to 0.0 space. My eventual goal is to get into the stealth/recon/cloaking side of things.

Minmatar
Flying a Bellicose cruiser
Can almost afford my first battlecruiser

I’ve been working on my engineering skills to try and cram as many shield improvements in my little Rifter as possible. Also, I’m trying to get a Rifter production line going; I figure if I mine the more common ores myself, buying the rarer ones will still give me a good profit. So if anyone wants to buy a Rifter, you know where to go.

I’ve been playing for a year and a half, on and off. After the first week I joined what was then a small empire industrial corporation, but we’ve been in multiple 0.0 alliances since then. Our corp is pretty relaxed, and for most of my career I’ve tended towards running agent missions. The current mission boat is a Nighthawk, which makes even the toughest lvl4 missions pretty easy. My other joy is complex behind-the-lines covert ops work, dodging bubble camps and such, but I’m not a huge fan of pvp otherwise.

Just recently I’ve spent a pile of time and isk setting up a cloak invention operation. I sank over a half billion isk into startup costs, and after the first dozen invention jobs I’ve nearly broken even already. The markup over material costs on covert ops cloaks is just insane.

Does Eve play this game?

Anyone else out there playing or want to play? We all seem to be scattered across the stars, but you can always stop by Pator system and pickup a Rifter from Tipsy Tyramatus’ Rifter Roundup.

Somehow I have trouble imagining our Eve playing EVE. But hey, maybe she’ll pop in and let us know.

I just started playing Eve as a direct result of reading this thread.

I’m still a total noob, I have a Minmatar character who has enjoyed flying around in a Breacher and blasting everything in sight with missiles. I have the skill but not the cash to buy a Stabber, that’s my next goal. I used to have a Rifter but … it … uh … yeah. It got clobbered. I shoulda warped out of there before the hull started taking such severe structural damage. Alas, she was a fine vessel.

Zharkar Tergosktrike, my lovely craft is the Creature.

Even if people are in different corps (pretty likely) we could always create an in game channel for SDMB users to join. Somewhere extra to ask for help or just chat when you are staring at an asteroid

I’m a minnie RP’er too! Or at least I was, until I took a break a month or so back, and lent my character to a corp mate. So what corp are you in? I was/am in Masuat’aa Matari myself (Ushra’khan alliance).
Death to amarr!
