Yanno, I really am sick of the people who come into a pit thread with no purpose other than to shit all over by being jerks.
I can see the point some Dopers have had about the uselessness of RO threads. But, let’s be honest, too - people get upset at different things. And simply because someone’s upset at something they can’t do anything about, doesn’t mean that they should have to be silent about it. Discussion may not be much, but it’s better than ignoring things.
Of course, it’s amazing to me that no one seems to have shat over any of the Virginia Tech Shooting threads. There are several posters who’ve been very immediately affected by the events there, but they’re the minority of those who posted in such threads. For most posts it seems to be nothing more that the same fucking reiterations of how awful it was.
So, if RO threads are so awful, why didn’t I see those posters most offended by them shitting over those threads? Is there some minimum number of deaths at which point it’s allowed to be pissed off? It’s obvious that one isn’t enough. Especially not if it’s one child killed a sex offender. Does it take two deaths to make it worthwhile to Pit? Or should we wait til it’s fifteen or twenty?
Let me restate things for you mouth-breathing idiots: As long as the thread title is descriptive, and the OP is reasonably coherent, there’s no reason to open a thread you’re just planning to shit over. Don’t be a jerk. It’s not that fucking hard, really.
Thanks for starting this. Thread-crapping is far worse than RO. We can start threads on anything the mods allow. If a thread doesn’t interest you don’t open it.
“Recreational Outrage” Some people claim to be offended at threads made just to express anger at some crime or other Bad Thing, and post mockery of the poster or the victims or just plain jokes in an attempt to screw up the thred and shut it down. Which, of course, is not only “recreational outrage” itself, but tacky, jerkish behavior.
RO is “recreational outrage;” such posts generally look like this:
Now, I’m all for letting people post about what they want.
The issue with RO, however, is that the people who post it don’t really seem outraged. There’s nothing in such a thing that shows investment in the topic, or any explanation of why this particular incident resonated with the OP, or any reason beyond the very existence of the story why anyone else should care about this story more than another.
I would venture to say that the hate for RO comes from an “artistic” level- where’s the value in the post? I would say also that there is a bit of vitriol reserved for people who are perceived to be taking a holier-than-thou stance by “showing off” what a good citizen they are by being outraged without actually doing anything at all.
A well-written or eloquent, or even somewhat explanatory OP is generally safe from threadshitters; it’s the two-line drive-by that draws ire.
And, while it can get out of hand, I cannot go on record as being against negative reinforcement that attempts to draw at least SOME attempt at fleshing out one’s outrage.
Personally I think of RO thread starters as smokers and RO haters as the anti-smoking brigade. RO haters have a point, but they’re quickly becoming more annoying than the actual RO threads. Why go out of your way to read something that you know will irritate you? Doesn’t seem much different to people who go out of their way to read something that will make them outraged.
God, please put me on board with this Pitting. I despise thread crappers and it seems we see more and more of them. It’s always “I don’t like it so you all better just shuit up.”
Okay, recreational outrage. I guess I’ve done that myself. Sometimes you just see or hear about something and you post it rather than let it sit bottled up inside you.

I thought both threads were inane at best. the fact that she posted two such threads pretty much at the same time made it all the worse, IMHO, (I’d have had the same reaction to two bushsux threads posted by the same poster right after each other FWIW). and I posted accordingly. You may call it thread shitting, I would disagree.
There’s no such thing as threadshitting in the Pit; if you want to lament the latest baby murder without threadshitters, take it to MPSIMS. Can’t stand the shit, stay out of the Pit.
In any case, PALATR at the self-righteous attention whores who get off on RO threads is moderator endorsed as a community-driven method of reducing their numbers. So I, for one, will continue to PALATR whenever one of them opens a thread with no other purpose than voyeuristic attention whoring.
That’s fine with me if you think my posts were inane. And I don’t see what difference it makes that I posted them within hours. Guess what? I had been thinking about both stories for a while, and that was the only time I had to get on the Dope today. Who cares?
Anyway, yes I was outfuckingraged and I felt the urge to share the stories with fellow Dopers, hoping to let off some steam and to engage in intelligent conversation about them. Besides, the Pit (as well as other forums) has been getting kind of boring lately, so I think the majority of people probably appreciate people posting interesting things that can spark interesting discussion. Isn’t that what the SDMB is all about?
By the way, I had never heard the term recreational outrage before. Pretty cute.
So go ahead and post your nay-saying comments in my thread. I know full well that it one of the hazards of starting a thread in the Pit. Or maybe you can come up with some better thread topics to keep us all entertained so we don’t have to waste our time with inane threads like the ones I started today.
So, to protest a behavior that you could ignore (If you weren’t so intent on giving your stamp of approval to every fucking thread in your Pit, that is.) you feel the need to prove how much better a person you are than the RO posters because you can tell them you’re not an attention whoring voyeur?
