Can we please ban "recreational outrage" posts?

So many are popping up lately that this board is looking less like the SDMB and more like a rotten.com message board. Can the Mods please put their foot (feet? foots?) down and ban child murder/animal murder/rape threads across the board? I don’t think anyone would miss them. If you would miss them then there’s something terribly wrong with you.

Oh yeah: fuckwits, cunts, can’t dance to it, etc.

Or at least bump them all to MPSIMS with warning label, like [RO] or something.

Never heard of rotten.com until this thread

Or create a “Recreational Outrage” forum.

Maybe “Down But Pumped” as a forum name.

Personally, I’m all for it. But obviously some people seem to find some value in them, so I’d at least like to hear from the pro-outrage side before making any sort of blanket policy.

I’m also for banning them. They aren’t discussions, they’re just contests in which one poster tries to be more righteously outraged than the last.

I’m usually fairly liberal, but I support the the death penalty for those that wish to ban recreational outrage posts.

Can we ban thread topics I don’t like either, and save me the trouble of simply not reading them?

This thread makes me so mad, I would like to eat its children…

What’s wrong with letting off steam once in a while? Nobody’s forcing you to read it.

How do they assist in anyone letting off steam? I quit reading them years ago because they seem to be nothing but holier-than-thou contests.

Well, there ya go. All you have to do is stop reading them, and everyone’s happy.

I think them rather pointless as well, but I don’t think they should be banned. Obviously some people find them cathartic, so let them blow off steam if they want. No one’s forcing the rest of us to read them.

I think those sorts of threads are rather annoying and don’t generally read them, but I don’t care about them enough to advocate them being banned, either. In its own way, isn’t the entire Pit about “recreational outrage”? In most threads there’s some personal element to it or at least some larger point, but it still boils down to, “This upset me. I am now going to write about it.” It doesn’t seem entirely fair to start picking the Pit apart by degrees, deciding what people can and cannot be “outraged” over. I kind of like the free-for-all aspects of it.

Because the SDMB has a standard? I like this place because of its intelligent content, even in the Pit. The internet has thousands of message boards, but this one is special in that regard. Don’t they disallow “joke threads” on the same principle?

I guess, for me, the issue is generic, I-read-the-news-and-can-post-something/anything outrage versus the personal OM$D!-this-just-happened-to-me-and-I’m-PISSED posts.

Yes, I read the news, too. And I’m perfectly capable of forming my own opinion without prompting from Seriously Outraged People.

On the other hand, if YOU have had something occur that annoys you enough to post, I’ll likely read it.

Screaming racial slurs and wishing death can be cathartic too.

Just sayin.

Like this one?

I’m really going to regret starting that thread, aren’t I?

Personally, these are among my least favorite Pit threads, but I hate to pass down a rule banning certain types of speech unless absolutely necessary.

I agree that we could do without these threads. I mean, there is probably something outrageous happening somewhere in the world every minute of the day, and yet we still survive. I can understand the need to post if a friend or family member is the victim or offender, but otherwise, I don’t see the point.
