Ipod video: 60gb versus 80gb

Im looking to get an ipod video, and Im wondering what advantages the 80gb has other than extra storage. I heard the battery life is better, which if true would be a huge plus…I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a comparison, or tell me yourself…thanks!

Do you mean the 30 GB vs the 80 GB iPod? Currently, Apple doesn’t produce a 60 GB iPod.

Battery life on the 30 GB is rated at 14 hours of music playback, and 20 hours on the 80 GB unit. For video playback, the ratings are 3.5 hours and 6.5 hours, respctively. Other than disk space and battery life, the only other difference is size - the 80 GB one is about a tenth of an inch thicker and an ounce heavier.

Full details are at iPod touch - Official Apple Support

Apple does make a 60gb video ipod.

They used to, but if you want one now you’ll have to find a used one. Brand new, Apple currently only ships the 80 gig ones.

AFAIK the only major differences between the 60 and the 80 are:

  • The 80 has more storage (well, duh, yeah)
  • The 80 gig has slightly better battery life (est. 20hrs playback vs. 15 or so on the 60)
  • The 80gb has a newer OS version that features a search function.

That last point has annoyed a lot of 60gb owners (like me) who wish they’d update the 60gb with that feature, 'cos most of us don’t want to go spent the money on an 80gb model just for a few extra features.

There may be other changes, but that’s what I’m aware of.

thanks!

I guess im gonna go for the 80gb. mine as well…
when do you think the next gen. will be out??

4 days after you shell out for the this generation one, same as always.

haha,ya. thats what im afraid of.

When and where do they usually make announcments?

Wherever they can. MacWorld, CES, E3 – though there are usually press releases well in advance to note their revelation of the goodies at these shows.

The last iPod gens were last fall, so I wouldn’t expect to see anything new on the horizon 'til press releases for the Christmas season start turning up. There have been rumors running around of a widescreen iPod with on-screen controls in the works ala iPhone, but Apple is stum about it as usual, neither confirming nor denying such rumors. I wouldn’t be surprised at it though. The tiny screen has been the iPod Video’s biggest sticking point (though far from a deal breaker).

Even if that rumor turns out to be true I doubt you’ll see it this year. I won’t expect to see 6G iPods 'til '08.

thanks!

i think ill go for the 5.5

MacRumours Buying Guide has buying recommendations, along with empirical data on the timing and features of previous releases. Their recommendation on fullsize iPods, naturally, is wait. Since the iPhone intro, many analysts and fanboys are assuming that the next flagship iPod, at least, will be the long-rumored true fullscreen video iPod.

When I was researching which to buy for my son, I remember reading that the 80Gs were supposed to be brighter. I never saw them side by side but his 80 is really bright.
