I think I just about wet myself when I saw the new iPod a few minutes ago… YUMMM!!!
I’m glad I waited for Apple’s many "One More Thing"s before ordering an iPod, as I was originally going to order it last week.

Urgh! Just a minute ago, I would have started this thread! But never fear, I have LINKS!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4336194.stm
Well, link, anyway. The article says that Desperate Housewives will be available for download at $1.99 the day after broadcast!
Wooo.
Not regretting my Nano. Nope. Not at all. Really really no. uh uh. Nope.
I wonder how many used Nanos will be going up on eBay in the next few weeks…
I am SOO glad that I didn’t order a 20GB iPod last week. Same price for 10GB more AND video!!! WOOOO!!!
Honestly, though, I’m not really regretting it that much… I don’t watch TV anyway, and hardly have even enough music to fill up my 4G nano… but the sheer power of NEW TOY MUST GET DROOOOOOOL is kinda affecting my senses now.
whimper
I’m betting not too many–the two have completely different purposes. I have a nano and I’m planning to get a video iPod as well (especially if the spouse, who’s in the iPod QA group, can get me one with his employee discount)–the nano’s nice to carry around on an everyday basis and listen to at work, but the video 'pod will be nice for watching TV shows and video podcasts and other stuff I can’t really get away with doing at work. And if they start offering “House” as one of their TV shows, that’ll be the deal-clincher for me.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of older-generation full-size iPods on eBay soon, though…
My old Creative has been acting up lately–the controls are just the least bit funky, and the left channel doesn’t come in unless you prop the audio plug just so–and I’ve been looking for a replacement. My big concern with the iPod was the price:storage ratio, but a $400 60 GB iPod looks good.
I personally don’t see the big appeal of a video iPod myself; watching anything on a 2.5" screen seems like it’s more of an effort than it’s worth. I’m more interested in Apple’s “Front Row” software, but only because I think it’ll make it easier for the rest of my family to watch our digital photos in the living room.
And Apple’s announcement that the iPod would now also come in black was amusingly predictable.
I won’t bother until it can pick up TV broadcasts.
Forget it. Don’t feel like a chump. In six months they’ll come out with a terabyte nano with a nifty little tripod (or shall we call it a triPod? I slay me) that can project high resolution video on a 100" screen or some such thing. Your new nano is truly a marvel of technology, is perfectly fine and will continue to be until it meets it’s demise. Time spent pod-less and waiting for the next iteration to come around is time wasted at this point. There’s always going to be something better a few months down the road no matter when you buy.
I guess it’ll seem more impressive once Apple lines up a few more content providers. I’m not entirely sold on the thing; it seems a shame that people who have a lot of music, but no desire to carry around downloads of boring network TV shows, are stuck with the larger form factor of the 5G iPod, which IMO doesn’t look quite as spiffy as the old. The thought of outputting a 320 x 240 video signal to a TV doesn’t exactly set the heart racing either.
I actually think the iMac kind of stole the show. They needed to catch up to Windows Media Center, and it looks like they pulled it off nicely. The iMac is now far and away Apple’s most attractive computer system, and that’s no accident.
Here’s the details on the type of video it plays:
Now, if it’s easy to convert AVI files to that format, I’d get it so I can watch MST3K episodes and be in complete bliss.
Is there really any sort of demand for Windows Media Center? I mean, aside from the ease of sharing your digital data with the family, I don’t know of a pressing need for any sort of “media PC” from any manufacturer.
Wha? Larger form factor? I was under the impression that it was exactly the same length and width as the 4G, and 31% thinner, i.e. 0.5 inch.
I will NOT think about how I just got a 20GB iPod on Monday, knowing this would happen.

At least you have Firewire on it.
This isn’t bad news for me. Prices on the current model will probably drop, and since I find the video output on the new vPod rather … disappointing (and I’m not going to watch a 2.5" screen) I should be able to pick up an ‘older’ model that actually transfers to/from my old Powerbook in under two hours.
Slight hijack, but talk about timing - my boss just called me into his office for something urgent…his iPod Music store isn’t working. I re-downloaded the software and we can get into what he previously ordered, etc. but cannot get into the store to let him buy some more tunes. It loads about 3/4 through on that top bar and then freezes.
Anybody else having this problem?
You may all continue to drool at the iPod Video (although I noticed in a article they intend to come out with a somewhat larger screen in the next versions, so unless you simply have to have it NOW, I would be inclined to wait until they get the kinks out of this version and come out with the bigger screen version - but that is just me…)
Apple has inked a deal with ABC and Disney for Desperate Housewives and Lost episodes, and the Oscar-nominated Pixar shorts will also be available (who’s Pixar’s head cheese again? )
Well, it’s a bit smaller and cheaper than the 40Gb Archos unit I bought almost two years ago, but the Archos does have a 4 inch screen and plays standard avis, so I probably won’t be rushing out to buy this one…
Too bad the content will probably only work on the iPod; I’d consider the downloads if I could use them on something else.
It’s funny how a few sci-fi imaginations have driven 30 years of technological innovation. Seriously. How many people reading this thread do not have a phone that flips open and can answer on that flip motion * JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL STAR TREK’S COMMUNICATOR* ??
How many of us see the direct connection between the Dick Tracy t.v. wristwatch and the coming fusion of Internet II, small portable HD space, LCD monitors and WiFi ? There ya go.
I’m not grateful to Steve Jobs. I’m grateful to Gene Roddenberry.
Cartooniverse, who doesn’t own an iPod.
yet…
I just got my first mp3 player. It’s got 250 MB of memory, or about 100 songs, which is plenty for the small amount of walking I do (parking lot to school and back), and even better, it’s literally about the size of my thumb. Best of all, it was free; I got it as a perk for getting high-speed Internet through BellSouth.
I’m sticking with my current gadgets until I can get one device that has ALL the following:
[ul]
[li]Cell phone[/li][li]5.0 megapixel camera[/li][li]USB drive (1 GB or more)[/li][li]mp3 player[/li][/ul]
I imagine this will be available in maybe three years.
