A couple days ago, the clutch (standard transmission) on my car suddenly became really grabby. Just not releasing cleanly or smoothly like it had earlier in the day. I don’t remember how long it was between the previous drive and drive in question; not long though, perhaps a half hour.
I tried to think of any reason for this to happen and the only thing that came to mind was the weather. The weather had been cold and dry for almost a week. But that day was overcast and a weather front was moving in. It started to rain about an hour after it became grabby.
My question is, could the change in humidity cause this grabbiness?
I’ve never heard of humidity affecting clutch operation. Did the grabbiness go away when the weather got drier?
Normally the cause would be contamination of the clutch disc by oil leaking from the tranny or engine, or a mechanical fault such as a broken spring in the disc or pressure plate. The latter would be more likely to come on suddenly.
I have noticed that the clutch in my BMW often chatters after the car has just been started on cold, rainy days. This never happens under any other circumstance.
