Trivial Feud Part II

The Rules, in case you are new to this: DON'T READ THE THREAD BEFORE YOU POST!

Post your responses to the questions below; after there have been 50 responses, I will double the value of the response to each question to come up with the Survey Says. Don't assume the game is over just because there are 50 posts--sometimes I drop in with scoreboards, lists of responses so far, etc. mid-game.

You want to post what you think the most popular answer will be. If all 50 respondents have the same answer as you, you will get 100 points like in Family Feud. After 50 responses have been posted (including my own, since I can't keep from playing this myself), I will tabulate the results, declare the winner, and post the scoreboard. There are ten questions and 1000 possible points; Dolores Reborn, the defending champion, won with 532 points, which AFAICT is a record in both Family Feud and Trivial Feud (the record low seems to be 151 in Family Feud Part IV, though there was a conspicuous lack of scoring in some of them, and a few of the threads are missing). Results of TFPI are here.

"Pass" is considered an answer--that is, the more people pass on the same question, the more points you get--but don't hesitate to use a search engine to find another answer if you can't come up with one off the top of your head. But remember that it's not important to find a factual answer--you're trying to find the answer that the most people will choose. Historically, passing has generally not been worth many points, although it worked for one question in TFPI.

There is no rule about how to format your answers, but I would appreciate it if you number your answers, minimize the line spacing between them, and emphasize the answers themselves if you feel you must paste in the questions.

Good luck!

While I certainly wanted to smack my forehead when I read her response to that question, she'll get points for it if anyone else answers with those exact five authors (not necessarily in the same order or anything).

Oh, shit...sorry. I misread the question. If you need to disqualify it, fine. Otherwise, go with the first answer, Shakespeare.

I have no idea. But I misread the question, thinking we were supposed to name five authors, not one, and those were the five I came up with that haven't written any new books lately, due to the fact they're dead.

See above... he said it counts, but you won't get points unless someone else gives the same exact answer.

I was just kidding about the disqualification bit.

FTR, according to some quick research, Faulkner's (notable, at least) work is not. Hemingway's early journalistic works are, but his novels aren't.

ETA: As convenient as it would be, accepting corrections after a list is posted would make the game's rules even more difficult to enforce.

Ha! I honestly didn't think of those. I was thinking more of earthquakes (the Pacific "Ring of Fire") and typhoons and such. But hey, Godzilla and company? Why not?

OK, I wrote a Python program to calculate the scores, and I did a hell of a lot of debugging, but it just spat out the list of responses, calculated my score so far, and died. Hopefully I'll get it working by the time the game ends.

Anyway, here is the list of responses so far:

1. Name an English dialect spoken somewhere in the British Isles.

Cockney 22
Scottish 3
Liverpool/Scouse 2

No score yet:

Irish
British
Yorkshire
Cant*
Geordie

* "Pikey" is an ethnic slur. You meant "cant" or "gamin", which is a language, not a dialect.

2. What was the most destructive riot in living memory?

I'm having trouble with this one. Someone said "Brixton, 1950s" but the only info on a Brixton riot I could find was about one that happened in 1981. Someone else just said "Brixton", so I don't know whether to combine those scores or not. Can any of the Queen's people help me out here?

LA/Rodney King 15
LA/Watts 13
Detroit/12th Street 2

3. Which area is most prone to natural disasters?

Southeast Asia 7
California 5
Gulf Coast 3
Southeast USA 2
Pacific Rim 2
Indonesia 2
Bangladesh 2
Florida 2

No score yet:

Caribbean
Indian Subcontinent
India
Japan
Thailand
Coastal areas
Southern California

4. Name a country occupied by Germany during World War II.

Poland 18
France 12

No score yet:

Yugoslavia
Austria

5. What is the most popular pastime in Australia?

Rugby 10
Beer 6
Cricket 5
Surfing 3
Drinking 2

(Yikes...)

No score yet:

Knife contest
Hiking
Football (Aussie)
BBQ
Knifey spoony (WTF?)
Crocodile wrestling

6. Name an operating system besides Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

DOS 12
Unix 8
OS/2 5
Amiga 2

No score yet:

Firefox (nope...)
BeOS (I was hoping this one would have some points)
Pass
VMS
CP/M

7. Which 1970s song has been sampled the most in hip-hop music?

Pass 12
Under Pressure 2
Funky Drummer 2
Impeach the President 2

Lots without scores...

8. What was the best movie of 2007?

Simpsons 5
No Country for Old Men 4
Ratatouille 4
Harry Potter 3
Sweeney Todd 2
300 2

Lots of unique ones here too...

9. Name one of the top five most popular writers whose work is in the public domain.

Shakespeare 21
Dickens 4
Austen 2
Twain 2

No score yet:

Doyle
Shakespeare, Dickens, Hemingway, Poe, Faulkner
Shelley

10. Which video game holds the record for most opening-day sales?

Halo 3 (correct answer, BTW) 18
GTA: San Andreas 2

And lots of unique ones.

In a similar vein, the Onion's "atlas" Our Dumb World has a spot in Australia marked as the "Paul Hogan Institute for Knife Identification." Brilliant stuff in there (though they were so thorough in other parts of the world, it was a little disappointing that they omitted a few Pacific Island nations entirely. Burnout, I guess).
