Outlook express error help

Hey. I’m one of those wonderful techno-illiterate people, so here goes…

I’m getting this error trying to receive mail via my ameritech account.

An unknown error has occurred. Account: ‘pop.ameritech.yahoo.com’, Server: ‘pop.att.yahoo.com’, Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x80004005

Now, I’ve been able to send mail just fine, and receive mail via web-browsing, but not receive mail on OE. I used this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q299496/ and it didn’t seem to help. I’m getting kinda frazzled, so whatever advice can be given, I’ll be happy to take it.

I’ve found that Outlook Express has some curious and hard-to-reproduce errors, many of which can be fixed by merely deleting and re-creating the account used to send and receive mail. I’m not sure quite how or why this works, but it does seem to fix errors of this description.

To delete an account:
Tools->Accounts->Select the required account->Remove

(This won’t delete any email, just the settings required to download and send mail)

You can re-create the account according to the instructions from Ameritech.

I also came across this thread on the dlreports forums: Outlook Express, Ameritech Email, with SSL and AVG 7.5 - AT&T Midwest | DSLReports Forums
This seems to suggest that AT has changed their port numbers to 5100, or that AVG Anti-virus might be interfering with the mail-sending.

“0x80004005” is a generic ‘not connected to server’ error - assuming your internet connection is otherwise working normally, the port numbers are the best place to start, followed by just nuking and recreating the account in outlook.

Tried deleting and re-establishing the account. No go. Still gives me the same damn error.

Okay, on the tail of this, it still isn’t fixed, so can anyone recommend a simple mail program that I can export OE message rules and address book to?
