Roadkill Cafe: Anyone Willing to Admit Eating Here?

The title says it all, really: Which Dopers are willing to admit to having eaten roadkill?

I have had roadkill venison. My parent's live close to a fairly busy secondary road, and from time to time deer wander along the road, and into traffic - with a fraction of that number getting hit by vehicles, and killed. One evening, they were sitting to dinner when someone came to the front door and asked to use the phone. (Yeah, this was in the days before cellphones were ubiquitous.)

My father let him use the phone, and stuck around just to verify that the call wasn't something completely out of line. The guy using the phone was dancing around trying to tell his father/brother to come and claim this deer, just killed in an accident, for the meat, for fear of offending my father. Once my father realized what was going on, he told the guy that he didn't have to dance around things - he'd enjoyed venison a time or two.

Well, a couple of days later, the guy came back, and handed my parents a couple of pounds of venison steaks, by way of a thank-you.

No.

But, I had a buddy intentionally hit a pheasant once, and his family ate it.

I also knew a guy who was a kind of survivalist, and whenever a deer would get hit in a state park that he "lived" near, the rangers would let him know about it, and he'd come and get what he could.

That guy, I shit you not, had a mountain bike with a gun rack on it -- attached to the handlebars. Just for one gun, so it wasn't much of a "rack" exactly.

While on a camping trip in eastern North Carolina years ago, I saw a canebrake rattlesnake writhing on the road. When I stopped to look at it, it was clear that it had been hit by a car and wasn't going to make it. I dispatched it by beheading it with my knife. I then skinned it, put it in my cooler, and cooked it over an open fire later that day. It did not taste like chicken to me.

I've had roadkill pheasant before now. These days, though, I get enough through friends who go shooting, and don't really need more. Obviously the idea would be to ensure that it's a recent kill and not badly mutilated.
