Top Western Movies

My brother is coming to town for the Thanksgiving holiday. I thought it’d be nice to Netflix a few westerns, so I went to see what the AFI said was the top 10 westerns.

Um, yeah. I don’t think so. For example Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid might be a “great” move, but I couldn’t get 10 minutes into without changing the channel. BORING!

So let me ask this is a different way. What are some of your top / favorite westerns that you would enjoy sitting down to watch again right now?

Some of mine are:
[ul]
[li]Unforgiven[/li][li]True Grit (You’re getting ready to see a lot of John Wayne favortism)[/li][li]El Dorado[/li][li]McLintock![/li][li]Rio Bravo (Basically the same movie as El Dorado)[/li][li]Pale Rider[/li][li]Tombstone[/li][/ul]

Silverado, for certain.

3:10 to Yuma (2007 film). I never saw the original, but I did enjoy the newest remake.

Butch Cassidy (sorry!)
Red River
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Magnificent Seven
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Yojimbo
Stagecoach
The Oklahoma Kid (if only for the casting – James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart as cowboys!)
Support your Local Sheriff!

John Ford’s Cavalry trilogy: “Fort Apache”, “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon” and “Rio Grande” – great movie making, with a fascinating rhythm that wouldn’t go over in today’s bam, bam, cut to the chase world.

Oh, and “Rio Bravo”. Not only a fine western, but a great showcase for a young Angie Dickinson.

The Outlaw Josey Wales
Tombstone
Unforgiven
Open Range
My Darling Clementine
The Searchers

I’ll second Magnificent Seven and Stagecoach.

Shane!

No one’s said Shane!

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West ranks up there, too.

My Darling Clementine - Henry Fonda at his best and Victor Mature at his very best.

Red River - John Wayne really acts and Montgomery Clift is excellent and Walter Brennen is delightful.

Ride the High Country - The passing of the Old West was never done better. One of the earliest Sam Peckenpah featuring Randolf Scott and Joel McRae.

Cowboy - is very good very interesting job done by Jack Lemon and Glenn Ford.

Cheyenne Social Club - Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart together with an interesting premis. Not great acting perhaps, but good fun.

Both Judge Roy Beam movies are good, the Walter Brennen/Gary Cooper film and the Paul Newaman movie (weird, but good).

What, no love for Blazing Saddles?

Don’t miss these!

*The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Naked Spur
Winchester '73
*

All three star James Stewart and are great Westerns.

“I don’t want to play in your yard/
I don’t like you any more!”

Petrobey Mavromihalis, I would have said Shane during my short-lived crush on Alan Ladd. Now I say *High Noon *for my eternal crush on Gary Cooper.

The Cowboys with John Wayne. I love that movie! And Rooster Cogburn - is that the one with Katherine Hepburn?

Lonesome Dove

Jeremiah Johnson

Second The outlaw Josey Wales. Clint’s best.

The Wild Bunch

Once Upon a Time in the West

If you’re looking for something really good that he might not have seen, try Seven Men From Now, a Budd Boetticher western with Randolph Scott and Lee Marvin. The final showdown has gotta be one of the best ever.

Blazing Saddles

Unforgiven

Pale Rider

3:10 to Yuma

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
I’ll think of more as soon as I hit “submit…”
