Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo

In the song, Rick Derringer sings "I hope y'all know what I'm talking about."

Well, no. I'm afraid I don't. Not at all.

Is a "hoochie-koo" a woman? A party? A concert venue? Looking at my questions, I guess I'm reasonably confident that it is a noun of some sort, but I guess I can't be 100% certain. Is it perhaps an adjective (adverb?) modifying "rock and roll"?

I had to look up the lyrics to be sure, but my first thought was that he was talking about having sex with groupies.

I think you need the rest of the verse to understand what he is talking about.

I hope you all know what I'm talkin about
the way they wiggle that thing really knocks me out
gettin high all the time, hope you all are too
come on little pussy gonna do it to you

The rest of the lyrics more or less support my theory I think. Though the groupie bit is debatable I suppose. He might just be talking about getting high and having sex to good ol' rock and roll.

Everyone was always talking about who put the bomp, but I always wanted to know just what is was.

Son, you're really thinking about this too hard. Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n Roll. That's all it's about. don't sweat the details. Maybe it sounded better than "Scooby Do" or "Rooty Too" or something.

Alright, alright. I'll give it a shot...

From Urban Dictionary we get:

Quote:
hoochie: a female who appears to match a set of characteristics including: trashy, often inappropriately tight dress (with or without pudge overflowing waistband); eyebrows shaved and penciled back on in dramatic fashion; heavy, mostly monotonic makeup with dark lipstick; large, gaudy, costume-grade jewlery. Frequently accompanied by multiple children from different fathers (see baby-daddy).
That's the polite version.

Keep in mind the UD definition is from 2004 and the Derringer tune is of the early '70s. However, I believe the essence (eew) of what constitutes a hoochie is roughly the same.

Now for the second part:

Quote:
koo: The act of which the primary aim is to gain, regain or sustain social status, by partaking in an action that the individual perceives to be "cool".
Or something. Hang on...

*puts on Frankenstein, takes big hit on doobie, holds it in, exhales*

aaah...what were we talking about?

Building on mack's research, from "Cassell's Dictionary of Slang", we get:
Quote:
hootchy-cootchy n. (also hoochie-coochie) 1 [late 19C+] (orig.US) a form of highly suggestive belly-dance, usually performed at carnivals. 2 [1980s+] (US) sexual activity [ety. unknown; perhaps no more than a showman’s idea of an ‘exotic’ or ‘Oriental’ name, the vowels of which suggest the sinuous gyrations of the dancer]

IIRC, in the lyrics on his album, it was "Come on a little closer, gonna do it to you."

I also think it's more pronounced as same on J. Winter's version, which had Derringer playing.

Been years, though, so I could be wrong.

He's still kicking around, still playing that song about screwing groupies, inconsistent though it may be with his testimonial that
"the Lord allowed me to survive drugs, alcohol and sins of the flesh so that I can stand here today as an example"... an example of what, I'm not sure, but he's also happy to tell you about his "vision", which seems to be some kind of home business scheme.

I've got it on my MP3 player. The first several times I listened, I thought he said "little pussy," but the last time it came on, I was paying closer attention, and I agree that the lyric is indeed "a little closer."

Yeah, the hoochie coochie was a sexually suggestive belly dance or striptease. As found in the earlier Coasters song Little Egypt (audio):

She let her hair down and
she did the hoochie koochie real slow, wo wo,
When she did her special number on a zebra skin,
I thought she'd stop the show, wo wo,

I'm sure "hoochie coo" as used in the song just means sex, or a dance leading up to it, or is a shout-out to the girls wiggling out in the audience.

(The Urban Dictionary usage of hoochie to describe a particular type of woman is more recent IME.)

Damn internet lyric sites! "Come on a little closer" is a whole lot less suggestive. Well, a little bit less suggestive a least.
