Is there an audio equivalent of YouTube?

I want to generally share some audio recordings I’ve made. YouTube seems the obvious place, but they don’t accept audio-only recordings. Where should I place them?

I don’t know of one, but you could simply embed them into blank videos or 1-frame videos.

Ah, rats! I meant to place this in IMHO.

Yup, I like to use YouTube as a jukebox for impulsive music listening at work and lots of the “videos” that I pick are nothing but static album cover pics or just a blank screen that says the name of the song.

The Internet Archive accepts audio in the public domain, or audio you have the rights to. See the Uploading section of the FAQ:
http://www.archive.org/index.php

Wikimedia Commons takes audio files. They only accept Free Content.

I’m not sure they count as audio equivalents to YouTube though. It all depends on what you want out of the website. What are they recordings of, by the way?

As was already mentioned, it’s fairly common on youtube to have videos of a single image (often an album cover or a picture of the band). The one thing I don’t like about youtube is that the sound quality tends to be rather horrible. It’s not too bad if I’m listening through my computer speakers, but if I go through my stereo with headphones it just sounds awful.

There used to be a site where artists could upload their songs for free (within the size limit specified by the site), which was where a lot of new artists would post their music in the hopes of being discovered. The site has changed a bit over the years, and I forget what the original name was, but at some point it merged with download.com to become music.download.com. I don’t know if it is still free to upload there. I took a quick look and didn’t see any fees listed, and a 50 MB limit for space. I didn’t look very hard, though, so I may have missed the fees.

With YouTube’s new HD format, you can also get HQ stereo sound. In the case of this classical piece, it sounds as good as any CD I’ve listened to through my computer speakers.

Having said that, I don’t know anything about putting videos on YouTube or how you get this format.

I suspect that there’s not, at least for music still under copyright. Sites like Pandora aren’t allowed to let you skip very many songs because play-on-demand internet radio where you simply select the song you want and listen to it are illegal.

It depends on the specific license. Last.fm lets you do exactly that and skip any amount of songs, but many songs are not supported by this or only allow 30-second clips in play on demand. I would not want to run an internet radio company; that’s for sure.

You can host them on a Myspace Music account.

imeem lets you upload music.
