And I’m not counting MMORPG.s, since they are per default supposed to be never-ending. My example would be sessions of Football Manager that I’ve kept going for several months with 100.s of playing hours. I just topped 10 days (playing time, I’ve had it going since spring) on my current session.
So what would be your longest “run” on the same save-game?
I imagine it would have to be a Sim or other Sandbox game, since most other games have a set ending.
Besides an ongoing pen and paper RPG campaign that’s been going on for…hmm… close to 5 years now, I think Rock Band’s gotta be it. It’s been almost a year now, and I still plastishred from time to time.
My longest computer game would be a campaign from Heroes of Might and Magic 3. (It consists of a series of separate maps, but keeps the same hero throughout.) Probably 15 hours in all.
On a related note, my longest chess game lasted 11 hours (adjourned twice and thus played over 3 days).
It was in a Dutch international tournament and I spent most of the time trying to win with King, Knight and 4 pawns against King, Bishop and 4 pawns.
Heh, the standard joke among my gaming circle is “Anyone up for a game of World in Flames ? If we start now, we might have finished setting up the board by Tuesday !”.
I never played it, but there used to be a bord game called the “rise and fall of the roman empire” or something like that, according to a friend of mine it was allmost a realtime simulation
Our SDMB game of Travian has been going since the end of July. It is not uncommon that I spend over half an hour on it a day, sometimes more. I’d say that would be close.
Otherwise, I had a game of Civilization 1 that I must have logged around 400 hours into. I terraformed every square of the map to look like the Borg had taken over. Hey, when you are 14 and it’s summer break you have a lot of free time.
My longest single save game would have to be Final Fantasy X. 120 hours right now and I’m not finished. I’ve topped off my stats (except HP), captured 10 of every creature, equipped Ribbon on every armour and won too many Blitzball games to remember in order to get Wakka’s celestial weapon. All that’s left is to kill all the Dark Aeons and original monsters. I’ll get around to it eventually, I’ve moved on to Valkyria Chronicles and FFXII for now.
The thing I love most about the Final Fantasy series of games is the high-end content. FFX has bucket loads.
I’d say the longest single game I’ve been involved in would be a game of Diplomacy on Cat23. One of those took two years to reach a conclusion.
For non-single games I’ve been playing Out of the Park Baseball with several Dopers and others since, I think, 2000 or 2001 or so. We’re about 12 or 13 seasons in.
And for tabletop games there was a release about 1980 of ‘Freedom in the Galaxy’. Awesome game and pretty blatant star wars rip in which the set up could take hours because you needed to set up about 40 or so star systems before you could begin to play. Hell of a game, though. I’d still play it if I had the time.
I’d have to say FFXII. I was just shy of 200 hours playing time when I finished. I did everything including getting the final sword and completing the bestiary. It was an annoying grind.
I’ve logged a lot of time on FO3. I might even log as many hours on it as FFXII. But it’s a lot more fun. Since I’ve maxed my level and have a shit-ton of caps, I’ve stopped looting anything I don’t need that has weight. This should speed up the game a bit since I don’t have to go hunting around for shopkeepers who are not only open but have enough caps for trade as frequently as before.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. I’ve logged probably hundreds of hours playing it, and I didn’t even get far into the plot. Some people have logged over a thousand hours playing the same character.
Anyway, my answer would be Mafia: Simpletown, because that was the only one I’ve lived to the end of so far. It lasted, I think, for about a month and a half, maybe 2 months.
The longest game I’ve ever played (barring WoW and assuming that “real life” games count too) is a Shadowrun pen-and-paper RPG campaign that ran nonstop between once and four times a month, from 1991 through 2006.
At that point I discovered WoW, introduced it to all but one of the players, and we all became WoW junkies.
If this is limited to video games, I’d say it’s probably either one of the early Final Fantasy games or else maybe Lunar: The Silver Star or Chrono Trigger. I don’t remember, though–I didn’t really keep track of how long I played those games. I just remember that I spent a lot of time on them when I was playing them.
Who! I just thought of another example, which however is from a MMORPG, so it doesn’t really qualify.
My cuz and his friends were really, really (yeah, really!) into Eve Online when it first got started. After having played it for three years they were talking with their friend who works at CCP (the co. that runs Eve) and he mentioned that he could check out their log-on time. Being of a curious nature, they accepted his proposal but were flabbergasted when they saw the result.
Turns out they’d been logged on for more than 200 days over those three years
(in their defense, they were working as night watchmen and thus could be logged on for most of their shifts)
