DSYoungEsq, you supercillious toad...

Posters like **DSYoungEsq ** who think that “civility” and “politeness” can be made a reality by law, remind me of people like Cato, Franco and such morons, thinking that morality can be fixed by fiat.

I think Cato, Franco, and those people are Cunts of the worst order, and send a heart fuck off!, to them.

I hope you say that to [someone prone to linking to threads], and they link for you.

Yep i was referring to that exact thread

Hi Frodo, I reported your Op as I am curious as to what the pit mods will say about it. This is nothing against you and I assume your OP is both serious and a bit of a test. By reporting it, the mods will not be able to say they did not see this thread.

For the record, I think **DSYoungEsq ** has been acting like a jerk or to be more precise the little old lady in the neighborhood that hates all the rowdy teens playing their music too loud and having a car in the front yard they are working on and not keep the grass trimmed short enough and especially for being on her lawn. The nerve of posters stating their opinions on board changes.

No prob What Exit?, you understood exactly the point of the thread :).

<Note–the rules I’m attempting to abide by are the ones posted in The Pit at the time I posted this message and are quoted below. Footnotes provided for ease of use.>

DSYoungEsq[sup]1[/sup], there are a number of people who share your opinion that the new rules are fine and dandy, or that we should adopt a “wait and see” attitude, yet unlike you, they are able to do so with a modicum of respect for people who disagree with them and without coming across as a condescending, toadying, lickspittle.

I find your behavior hypocritical and your tone offensive and your posts irritating.

In this thread[sup]4[/sup] you make the following comment about people having a (mostly) reasonably civil discussion with Lynn and Marley

[sup]7[/sup]
This is condescending and indicative of the sort of smarmy, microcelaphic[sup]11[/sup] dick* you’ve been behaving as since this “new rules” thing came online (actually before–I’ve seen other condescending, junior mod wanna-be anti-poster snark of yours in ATMB and if I could get the search engine to work, I’d document more).

In[sup]7[/sup] this thread[sup]4[/sup], you describe your impression of the Dope as follows:

and[sup]7[/sup]

and[sup]7[/sup]

So GQ, The Game Room, The Pit, GD and Cafe Society are all boring or juvenile and predictable? This place is mostly filled with “complete assholes who think that they are entitled to be jerks”? Let me suggest that the problem isn’t in everyone else.

Again, I don’t object to your point of view on the new rules–I strongly disagree with them but that’s not the issue–it’s that the way you express them irritates me strongly–of ALL the posters, (except perhaps for Raindog) on the “I like these rules” or “Wait and see” side, you’re the only one who is so patronizing.

The twofold issues are
A) You have your nose so far up the mod’s assholes[sup]15[/sup] that you can tell what brand of toothpaste they use[sup]11[/sup]. It’s possible to agree with the mods without coming across as the toadying lackey[sup]11[/sup] wanna-be (not that the mods need lackeys of your caliber) that you are. It seems obvious to me (and apparently to at a few other posters) that you’re desperate for a moderator position. You will not be a successful moderator if you make your contempt for any poster who disagrees with you so obvious.

B) You are being smarmy, snarky, and condescending[sup]11[/sup], attributing the worst possible motives to everyone who doesn’t share your opinion which is intellectually dishonest[sup]11[/sup] and really not appropriate for the high tone you hope adopted.

You are a hypocritical, patronizing jerk.[sup]11[/sup] If you want to help [

](It's about time things changed on this MB. - About This Message Board - Straight Dope Message Board) then you should start with your own attitude and posts.

Revised Forum Rules for the BBQ Pit: read this before posting
[ol]
[li]The BBQ Pit is the forum for rants about the outside world or quarrels between posters - often the first turns into the second. Although the standards of discourse are looser than in the other forums, the Pit is NOT a free-for-all - you don’t have to be nice, but you do have to be reasonably civil. I’m assuming if “ignorant asshole”[sup]15[/sup] is “not a problem”, that “toadying lickspittle” and “microcelaphic” and “lacky” are fine. Apologies if they’re not.[/li]
Please observe the following rules when posting in the Pit:
.
[li]Rants should be suitable for the Pit[/li]Cutesy, “I Pit puppies for being sooo cute!” non-Pittings are not welcome here. Put them in MPSIMS. Rants which are genuine but simply too tepid or mundane for the Pit will be moved or closed as we see fit. Lastly, rants about personal trauma that are expected to generate mostly supportive, sympathetic responses will likely be moved to MPSIMS. This is not a commentary on the seriousness of said life events, merely on the best forum for that type of thread.
.
[li]The Pit is not your personal diary[/li]The Pit isn’t Cranks’ Corner or group therapy. Posters who glut the forum with threads or consistently hijack the threads of others may be subject to moderator action. No, there isn’t a magic number of threads or posts per day that are acceptable. (And if you’re even asking, you probably need a LiveJournal.)
.
[li]Include links when Pitting other posters[/li]When Pitting another poster, it is considered good form to include a link to the post or posts that inspired the Pitting. In the case of thread parodies, including a link to the thread being parodied is mandatory. Otherwise, no one knows what you’re talking about and confusion ensues.
.
[li]Do not threaten harm or wish death on another poster[/li]Do not threaten another poster with physical harm, or wish for their demise. This includes hypothetical statements like “it would make me happy if someone ran you over” or “I hope you say that to [someone prone to stabbing people] and they stab you”.
.
[li]Do not post contact information (email, phone, mailing address, etc.) to facilitate a campaign for/against a person, group, or issue[/li]We don’t want the board used to hassle people or groups of people. You can urge people to write their Congressperson or other political leaders, but let people find the contact information themselves. Don’t post it here.
.
[li]Quoting: do not alter words within quote tags beyond fair usage standards[/li]Do not change quotes of other posters or off-board citations beyond fair usage standards. If you delete material, use either ellipses or descriptive tags (e.g., <snip>, [material deleted], etc.) to indicate you’ve done so. To add non-editorial explanatory material, use square brackets, which means things like [sic] or replacing a pronoun to make a partial quote clearer. If you add formatting for emphasis, please indicate you’ve done so, either in square brackets within the quote or immediately after the quote. Quote tags are for actual quotes only - don’t use them to paraphrase another’s argument or make a joke.
.
[li]No hate speech[/li]If you say hateful and/or racist things, you may get warned or banned. Some slurs are likely to be viewed as hate speech when used as insults, some aren’t. No, we aren’t going to give you a list. Our goal is not to restrict any and all speech which could be viewed by someone as offensive, but simply keep a modicum of decency, even here.
.
[li]No trolling[/li]By trolling, we mean posting of inflammatory comments solely to get a rise out of people. If we feel your primary goal as a poster is to make people mad, you’ll quickly find yourself on the road to banning. On the flip side, the fact that a poster consistently makes you mad doesn’t automatically make them a troll.
.
[li]No obscenities in thread titles[/li]The rules regarding profanity in the Pit are the same as those for the rest of the SDMB. The board is intended for adults and occasional vulgarities will go unremarked. However, we don’t have unlimited tolerance for this. If you give the impression of having Tourette’s syndrome, we may tell you to knock it off.
.
[li]No abusive remarks directed at other posters[/li]Don’t direct obscenities or vulgarities at other posters - this includes everything from “fuck you” on up. If you don’t like another poster, you’re free to make that plain. That doesn’t mean you can say anything you want. Creative insults are permitted; crude vituperation is not. We’ll be the judge of what constitutes abuse.
.
[li]No harassment of other posters[/li]If you have a quarrel with a poster in a particular thread, fine. If you follow that poster from thread to thread and attempt to pick fights, that’s harassment and may get you warned or banned.
.
[li]No complaints about SDMB administration in the Pit[/li]All comments or complaints about SDMB administration should go in the About This Message Board forum, not in the Pit. Pitting of SDMB staff is permitted for views they express as ordinary posters.
.
[li]Mind the moderators[/li]In the Pit as in all other SDMB forums, the role of the moderators is to moderate. If we feel a thread is getting out of hand, we may tell you or the thread participants generally to back off. Such comments are simply cautions and in themselves won’t get you tossed off the board. (We reserve the right to make exceptions in extreme cases.) However, refusal to cooperate or persisting in arguing with a mod after you’ve been told to stop may result in disciplinary action. If you feel you’ve been unfairly treated, take your complaint to ATMB.

(note that I’ve modified the quote tags as I can’t get nested quotes to work any more. Mentioned so as to be in compliance with the quoting rule)

*I am assuming that if "ignorant asshole][sup]15[/sup] is permitted, then so is “dick”

One of the things I like about this board is the general tolerance for people with different opinions. That ought to go for meta-opinions too, such as opinions on how the board is run. I agree with what looks like a majority of the regulars, that Ed Zotti’s new regime will do more harm than good – but I think those with different views, such as DSYoungEsq, should be able to express those views without being gratuitously insulted. Saying he’s like a little old lady may conceivably contribute to the debate, but saying that he’s been “acting like a jerk” does not (IMNSHO).

Jesus fucking Christ, you all are turning into a bunch of old ladies.

You’re probably cursing your all your coding right about now. Frodo beat you to it.

Gosh darn it!

Well. I agree with this OP completely.

This is the pit, if i wanted to “contribute to the debate” i’ll post in other forums ( as i am doing in a couple of ATMB threads at this point).

Personally I’d agree that “supercilious” and “microcephalic”, while abusive, are creatively so and fall under the permitted exception. But that’s potentially junior modding so forget I said that.

Note the creative way I made a couple spelling corrections without being abusive.

Too much coding, didn’t read.

Yes, but this is a far better pitting.

He has been very dismissive of many posters concerns. To my viewing in the multiple ATMB threads DSYoungEsq has been very dismissive to other posters concerns. Thus my post.

I am taking a wait and see attitude to the changes. I don’t think it is the end of the world. You see oddly, I tend to agree with him on many of the core facts, I just strongly disagree with his constant dismissal of others.

Maybe that will clarify things for you.

Besides his own thread already linked to. There are posts like this:

Right. Clausewitz said that war is the continuation of diplomacy by other means. For me, the Pit is a continuation of debates in other parts of this board by other means. One consequence is that behaviour in the Pit shouldn’t be unrestrained, because it can affect what goes on in the rest of the SDMB. But, clearly, your mileage varies.

:: shakes fist at Frodo ::

Guilty as charged. Though I have almost never cursed another poster and I don’t think I have used in writing/posting the derogatory term that seems to be the major complaint and used in the Op.

My post concerning DSYoungEsq is actually my normal style of posting. I do not dislike DSYoungEsq. I just think he has been on the jerkish side in ATMB.

I’ve never understood why DSyoung"esq" hasn’t ever been warned for his relentless junior modding.
