Ladies: Socks on or off at the OBGYN?

I'm nearing the end of my pregnancy and so going to the OB once a week these days. This morning I had a little momentary debate in my head whether my socks should come off or not. Leaving them on felt weird...black socks and pasty white legs are not a good combination. :-) But I did end up leaving them on since a) I haven't really been able to reach my feet for awhile and am desperately in need of a pedicure and b) it was kind of cold and I didn't know how long I would be waiting. I hate getting cold toes!

But anyway it got me wondering what other women usually do. Does my doc think I'm weird for leaving my socks on? Or is that the norm? What say you, ladies?

I said "it depends". I almost never wear close toed shoes (except for the gym and I never where gym shoes anywhere else) so therefore rarely have socks on. But if I did I would definitely leave them on. Those stirrups are cold!

Off! Though if I was in the OP's situation, I'd probably be leaving them on.

However, I feel ridiculous in stirrups anyway - I'd feel more ridiculous with socks on.

I chose "it depends". In the summer, chances are that I'm not wearing socks to begin with. Any other time, keeping my feet warm trumps my sense of style.

Same as jsgoddess. My feet get way too cold to take them off if they're not the body part being examined.

All the stirrups I've ever seen have little fuzzy socks on them. I don't think I've ever seen them nekkid.

What about like those long socks? Like knee to thigh-high socks?

I've never been to the GYN so I don't really have an answer for the question. I am curious though.

Socks yes as I've yet to be in a warm exam room. Also, I do not bother to shave. It's not a leg or foot exam.

Socks. I'm pretty sure the doc appreciates not having bare feet shoved in his or her face.

me too, I picture a fuming doc...."Dammit, I'm a gynecologist not a podiatrist!"

something tells me OB/GYNs have a pretty high bar for squick. I cannot imagine anything an even halfway normal women does striking a OB/GYN as "weird". They have seen weird, socks don't even come close.

I always leave my socks on. I'm a chilly one.

Same here. That is, I do wear closed shoes, but I don't go out of my way to put on socks at the OB/GYN. But if I had them on to begin with, I'd keep them on.

I also thought you were a guy. I guess I just read your name more as WOOKIE, than WOOKIN...

My current gyn has covers that look like potholders (oven mits?) on the stirrups. I looked at them the last time I was having the annual torture, and they were advertisements from a pharmaceutical company.
The exam rooms at my clinic are pretty cold, so I leave my socks on.

If I'm wearing socks they stay on. I'm just more (physically) comfortable that way. Even if the exam room isn't cold, I don't like being barefoot indoors, except at home.

I'm thunderstruck that anyone would be self-conscious about how they look with socks on at the doctor's office. I'm as self-conscious, and as fashion conscious, as they come, and even I know that no one is going to notice your feet/socks, unless they are on fire.

A million years ago at my very first gyn appointment, the nurse suggested I leave my socks on. She said it helped some women feel a little less exposed. So I have always left my socks on. I doubt it would make any difference at this point, but it just became a habit.

I generally leave my socks on. Also, as a doc who does a fair number of exams most women leave their socks on. Although that's skewed because I'm in the ED and you definitely don't want to be barefoot on those floors.

It's really never crossed my mind. I mean, really, the only reason anything comes off is they NEED to so the doc can have access to the bits. There's no reason for a GYN appointment to involve foot inspections.

I never understood what the big deal was. Now, after reading this thread, I REALLY don't understand you ladies at all.

If I wear socks to the gyn office, they stay on. If I wear sandals or ballet flats without socks, then no socks. But I definitely wouldn't take off my socks to be examined. I'm naked enough already!

Yeah, I'm laying there with my legs spread and my cooch exposed while a stranger pokes around my nether-regions and feels up my breasts...my feet are pretty much the last thing I'm thinking about.

If I walk in wearing sandals I won't have socks anyway. If I walk in with socks I probably won't bother taking them off, unless I'm also wearing long underwear in which case it all comes off so it can be reassembled neatly later.

Like Renee said - someone is probing my cootchie, prodding breasts, doing things to intimate places and ya'll are worried about... socks? Well, I suppose it might be more interesting than counting ceiling tiles to take your mind off how cold the damn speculum is.

(Actually, every doc I've ever had use a speculum on me has been very good about warming it up first)

I once had to get up in the stirrups in white knee socks and pigtails (I was in my early 20s). The doc was an older man and completely fine as far as I could tell, but it was definitely a shot-for-shot remake of some Barely Legal porn, somewhere.

I answered socks, BTW. And they come off for sexy cooch prodding. Lets me remember which is which.

If I'm wearing socks when I get there, they stay on. Not a matter of feeling less exposed or anything like that, it's just that it isn't necessary to take them off. And then have to put them back on. The doctor isn't looking at my feet. Although I did have one comment on my 'cute socks' once. I think he might have been trying to keep things light. Nice of him to make the effort, but really...?

It's a doctor. You do what you have to do and go about your day.

Maybe next time I'm in the stirrups I'll make it a point to wear my rainbow toe-socks, just to see if anyone notices.

I have no real preference; if I'm wearing socks, they can stay on or come off, but generally in the past, I've gotten gyn exams at times when I'm wearing sandals with no socks.

Me, too. I wear tennis shoes when walking/exercising, and at no other time. But I would definitely leave my socks on if I were wearing them. If not... well, my toes will just turn blue.

Socks on. Skirt on, too. I mean, really--I get in the stirrups, and it falls out of the way anyway. Same with my shirt--I wear a loose t-shirt, take the bra off underneath while I'm waiting. There's no good goddamn reason for me to wear the stupid-ass paper gown. I'm probably going to be in there for fifteen minutes before the doctor gets in. The jeans and underwear go off, too. My OB/GYN's never complained. Everything's easily moved/adjusted for the pressing pelvic part, too.

I am barefoot 99% of the time I'm at home, but I am squicky about putting my bare feet where other people's feet germs may have been.

So I can't imagine taking my socks off at any doctor's office unless I didn't have to walk barefoot. In my gyno's office, at least, there'd be no way for me to take off my socks and stow them away and get to the exam table without putting my bare feet on the floor.

I've been to 3 OBGYN's in 5 years (finally settled on a great one) but most didn't have covered the stirrups. I wear socks when the stirrups aren't covered.

But as a side note, one of them had soft felty covers that was advertising a particular drug! I mean, I've seen pens and clocks and hand sanitizer and notepads....but branded felty stirrup covers!? They think of everything.

Socks on, always. And if I'm not wearing socks with my outfit that day, I bring a pair with me. I've never really though it (in fact, I thought everyone did this), but I think I'm in the "it keeps me from feeling totally exposed" camp.

IIRC, the last few years they've TOLD me to keep my socks on. Probably part to keep the tootsies warm and partly so the OB-GYN doesn't have people's feet in her face all day. (Yes, I appreciate the irony. But she's not there to inhale foot fumes.)

At least it wasn't the speculum (though it does remind me of the Aflac duck).

Socks on, Bra on, but hitched up out of the way, shirt on but moved when the Doc needs access.

There just isn't really any reason to get fully undressed, as far as I'm concerned. Besides, it's usually COLD in the office. I'm staying warm, thank you very much.

Not only that, but I sometimes worry that, one day, there's going to be an emergency and I'll be lying there undressed. If that were to happen, all I gotta do is grab my pants, purse, shoes, and coat (weather permitting) and I'm outta there!

Socks: OB/GYN

The best alternative is when those navy, crew socks are actually offered to you as an option! They're great and at least one practice allows you take your pair home at no extra charge! Now that's an exceptional OB/GYN!

Always, always, no matter what time of the year, the waiting room is a refrigerator, and the exam rooms are a freezer! I've been known to throw a sweater around my shoulders while sitting on the table wearing the paper dress. One doctor insisted on doing extensive charting, while I'm in a paper towel developing frostbite. I finally said, "Can I get dressed now, I'm freezing!"

"Oh, sorry."

I do wear my socks, but I have a very thorough doc and she wants to check the pulses in my feet. She pulls the socks off and hands them to me.

WHY can't they use some type of hand warmer, and heat up that stethoscope?

Ew, creepy. Trust me, sex is the last thing we're thinking of as we lay on that hard table covered in paper with our legs bent and up and stuffed into those metal stirrups, with our cold asses hanging off the edge. But hey, you have fun.

Does anyone else's doctor have funny posters on the ceiling of the exam room? Mine does. Last time I was in I suggested a flat-screen TV up there. She laughed and said she'd think about it.

Mine has Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow - which I think is brilliant. Candy for us adult women, and completely innocuous for women bringing in children.

I'm usually wearing leggings, so the socks come off with the leggings. Never been an issue for me.
