Eating grapefruit

I always eat grapefruit using the slice in half through the center, dig out the little triangular slices method. I even use a grapefruit knife. But in a recent discussion with a coworker, I learned that she had never heard of this method, and instead she completely peels the grapefruit, and then eats the individual sections as you would an orange. So what’s your method?

Here are some images to demonstrate the choices:

Slice in half between stems, cut around individual sections, eat each one with a spoon.

Slice in half between stems, slice into wedges, suck pulp out of each wedge.

Slice in half from stem to stem, slice into wedges, suck pulp out of each wedge

Peel and then break into sections and eat.

Peel and just bite into the whole thing, like an apple.

I buy my grapefruit already peeled and cut up.

I just don’t care for it. Haven’t had it in years.

I peel and divide it into sections, and then bite along the seam and tear and eat the good innards and discard the hull bits (the amount of raw fiber doesn’t treat me well).

I feel that the whole breakfast ritual “cut, separate each half-wedge, rest in bowl, painstakingly eat with serrated spoon” is the reason for this kind of attitude. Honestly, that’s just way too much work for a single citrus fruit that hurts you when you eat it.

Being somewhat of a culinary masochist, I just peel and section it like an orange and nom happily away.

I don’t get the people that spent fifteen minutes picking off all the pith, either.

Grapefruit kind of reminds me of oranges with aspirin.

I’ve decided that I hate grapefruit.

Eating it cancels out the benefits I get from one of my meds, so if I hate I will never care if I can’t have it anymore.

I voted cut, slice around sections, spoon, because that is what I do most often. (Though I don’t actually eat grapefruit often–I haven’t had one in at least six months.) But I do occasionally peel and eat the sections, as one would would an orange.

I do the peel and then break into segments thing. I also peel away some of the inner membrane, it being tough. And I love, love, love big sweet ruby grapefruit. However, I’m on statin drugs, so I’ve eaten my last Texas ruby. Sob.

When I was a kid my parents taught me to slice it and use the grapefruit knife to cut out each section and use the grapefruit spoon to eat it. It was all about having good table manners.
I had a grapefruit last week and just peeled it like an orange and ate the sections. It seems easier and quicker this way. I was eating alone with no one to see me or the mess I made.

Squeezed into juice, then served over the rocks with gin. But enough about greyhounds, my real answer to your question is I cut it in half then eat with a spoon.

I basically follow the first option, but I use a grapefruit spoon, not a knife. It does a better job of sectioning.

Speaking of statin drugs (I’ve been on 'em myself, although I’m not right now, so I’m eating grapefruit while I can, before the doc makes me go back on 'em)… does anyone know why you can’t eat grapefruit with statin drugs, but other citrus are okay? If it was just the acidity, then I’d think lemons, limes, oranges, and even tomatoes would be out as well.

I sort of mix your first two options - I cut it in half between the stems and then into wedges from the stem down. Then I eat it like a sliced orange, but I peel back most of the membranes with my teeth as I go. It’s messy and I suspect I make silly slurping noises while I do it, so it tends to be a solo activity. That being said, I probably eat between 3 and 5 a week. I grew up on them.

Ouch

Anyone else making faces as they read this thread?

I choose number one, but I haven’t had one in years and when I did I covered each half with sugar.

Eat it with a spoon, before which a liberal sprinkling of sugar is applied. Best…breakfast…fruit…EVAH!

I’ll eat it any way I can.

Better than a regular knife, or better than a grapefruit knife?

Well, it looks like I can tell my coworker that according to an extremely scientific poll, my method wins.

Me, too! Unfortunately, I can’t have it anymore because it might decrease the efficacy of a drug.

I usually put a little sweetener on mine, preferably Splenda.

Grapefruit gives me raging acid reflux. I can’t understand how some people can eat grapefruit and coffee together for breakfast. I would be dying for the rest of the day, or popping Prilosec on the hour.
