My girlfriend and I are testing out a theory that, generally speaking, males will more often say Seinfeld was the better show, while females will go with Friends. So just choose the option of which show you think was/is better and what sex you are. If you hated both shows and/or don’t know if you’re a boy or a girl, you’re in the wrong thread.
Seinfeld, although I loved Friends.
Everything about Seinfeld was genius, it’s my favourite show of all time. I have worn out the DVDs. Friends was a favourite while it was on TV, and I still enjoy reruns, but I wouldn’t buy the DVDs just because I feel like I’ve seen every episode so many times. Ross and Joey were annoying characters, too.
I have a pee-pee.
Well, it seems that your first voter has conformed to your prediction. I really don’t care for either show much, but if I’m bored and can’t find anything else good on TV, I’ll watch Seinfeld. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to watch Friends for more than 10 minutes or so before I decide to be bored doing something else.
Friends hit a few very good notes, but Seinfeld was the better show overall, and held up better in later seasons too.
My first instinct is to say Seinfeld, because I can imagine watching it again. But, I actually tried to watch Friends, back when it was fresh. The only reason I bothered to watch Seinfeld is because it was on. My first episode was actually the finale.
But ultimately I have to judge a sitcom by how funny it is. And I never found Friends funny, even though I liked it. And it’s even less funny now. Seinfeld, on the other hand, grew on me.
Male, Seinfeld. I hate to be predictable…
I rewatch Friends now but don’t bother if Seinfeld is on. I guess that makes my pick obvious.
I liked Friends initially but then got progressively more sick of it. I don’t even like to watch it in reruns. I don’t watch old eps of Seinfeld anymore either (a little sitcommed out to be honest), but I think it was funnier, and I quote it and refer to it way more. I hold that of the 90s sitcoms, Frasier was the best, though.
Clit bearer here.
Love Seinfeld - one of my favorites since I was little. Hate Friends, although I used to watch it as well (we had like 3 channels).
Don’t think I ever laughed at Seinfeld, but I think Friends was hilarious.
Joey and Ross might be annoying characters, but EVERYONE in Seinfeld is annoying.
ETA: I have a pee-pee.
I thought Seinfeld was more realistic in that, unlike in Friends, the characters weren’t unbearably cute, just like the name “Central Perk”.
I dislike Friends less than Seinfeld, but I never went out of my way to watch either.
I’m a girl and liked Friends more than Seinfeld.
I never could get into Seinfeld. I thought the characters were all real jerks - not people I’d want to know IRL. Whereas I could hang with people like the Friends.
Seinfeld by far. Friends was a good show for its time, but it hasn’t held up well. Seinfeld, OTOH, has aged superbly. You can just jump into the middle of just about any episode, know instantly what’s going on and laugh your ass off even after repeated viewings.
Seinfeld was the better show. It actually had some wit to it. I never could get into Friends.
I’m a chick.
Oh I know they’re all jerks in Seinfeld - that’s sort of the premise of the whole show - but they’re funny jerks, in my opinion. To me Ross and Joey were just annoying with little to no humour to offset the jerkiness, although they both did have their moments.
I watch reruns of Seinfeld every night at 10 and am all the better for it.
Last night: the invention of the ‘bro’ (or ‘mansierre’) - I still laughed my butt off.
I once tried to watch Friends. I really did. I watched half of one episode and just couldn’t do it. I hated every single one of them.
I am a girl.
At the risk of sounding ambivalent; I hated friends but they did on occassion have some funny one liners when I was forced to whatch the show with my (at the time) GF.
“Hey, you want some chocolate milk?”
“No thank you, I’M 29!” (heh)
Seinfeld on the other hand was the best. George was my favorite:
[pause] “Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorence on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon… you know, cause I’ve worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.”
Bwahahaha!! Still makes me smile.
Male here.
I really liked both shows, but Seinfeld is the clear winner to me. It took a little while to grow on me, but I watch the reruns pretty often.
Giddyup!
Friends all the way. I hate, hate, hate, hate, HATE everyone on the entire cast of Seinfeld and never found anything funny about any of them. It wasn’t so much that they were jerks, though they all were, or that they were all self-absorbed, though they all were, it’s that they endlessly dissected and defended and yammered endlessly about their jerkishness.
Sienfeld sucks so bad it pulls the air out of small planets. Friends is pure mediocrity, but, really, a test pattern is funnier than Seinfeld.
I didn’t mind self-absorbed; I disliked the fact that the characters on Seinfeld were idiots and consistently did things that were just plain stupid (and usually weren’t funny). Even things that sounded funny when described were performed in such a way as to dampen any comedy potential the idea had. If there was a way to set a scene in the least funny possible way, Seinfeld would find it.
Plus it had Jason Alexander, the black hole of suck.
Personally, I wouldn’t bother to watch either.
