Suck it up kid. I’m in the 18th Grade and going strong.

Times like these i WISH I was in College. That was Easy street, the good old days.
Enjoy it while you can, kid…

And watch yourself, the e’s are always the first to go…

good advice

i wouldnt complain so much except now i am very tired

You could, I suppose. But wouldn’t it be great to learn how to spell and punctuate correctly?

Some employers like that.

Good luck on your exams!

You don’t want to live with mom forever. One reason is that you may eventually drive one another crazy.

Another is that even if you are an interesting and likeable person, eventually people will start assuming all kinds of icky things about you and not want to hang around you. Unless you are very strong in your self-worth, this will make you alienated and bitter, and people will be right not to want to hang with you.

PSXer --if you quit whining, you might “hat it” less.

Seriously, consider a change of Majors, before dropping out.

Hint? Choose a program that has an immediate career opportunity on graduation.

right now i am majoring in Latin and Ancient Greek are there a lot of careers for that?

Honestly, if you hate being in college all of the time, rather than just during exam week, and you’re not wedded to a career plan that requires a particular degree, you probably should rethink whether it’s right for you. You can always go back and finish a degree later; you can’t get back the money and time that you’ve wasted if you’re just going through the motions. Also, regardless of what people tell you, getting that piece of parchment and living with your mom forever are not the only options. For some people, trade school or the military are better choices. It depends on what you want to do and what, if anything, you’re getting out of your college education.

I say this as a college professor, by the way – I believe in college, and I think at its best it’s a wonderful, life-transforming experience – but I also see a lot of students who just aren’t ready, or aren’t academically inclined at all but haven’t been told that it’s OK not to be.

Well, dead languages don’t generally serve as direct points of entry to many careers, unless you’re going into academia. But you could always go to graduate or professional school after college - many Dopers did that, and I think more are happy with that decision than not. And a good liberal arts education can prepare you for some interesting jobs straight out of college. One of the most important things you can do is make sure that you get good work experience while you’re in school. In particular, try to do interesting internships over the summer - don’t just flip burgers. These make you more attractive both to future employers and grad schools, and may help you figure out what you want to do.

I suspect you’re new to college - a freshman, maybe a sophomore. You’ve plenty of time to figure these things out, honest.

And I’ll join the chorus of people urging you to enjoy the experience. College can be one of the best times of your life - your full-time job is to learn interesting things from smart people. What could be better?

Not if you don’t learn how to write correctly.

One other thought - college is the first time that a lot of people really learn to write seriously. Learning to write comfortably in grammatically-correct sentences, with ideas following one after the other in some kind of logical sequence, is a tricky thing. You’d probably do yourself a favor by practicing that skill even when you could get away with more casual writing. This Board is a good place for that - we have a culture that encourages strong writing, and a good thread here often showcases how written discussion and argument can work well.

Agreed, but I’d emphasize this is not the time to decide that college isn’t for you. In particular, don’t go ahead and decide “Well, college isn’t for me, so it doesn’t matter if I fail my exams.”

Study hard. Do well on your exams. Then you’ll have the whole summer to think about your plans for the fall. But don’t take away future options by blowing off your coursework now.

Mitch: Mom? Mom, are you there?
Mom: Baby, you sound upset. What’s wrong?
Mitch: Mom, I don’t like it here anymore. I want to come home and live with you.
Mom: It’s not for you to like. It’s for you to do. You’re fifteen years old now…
Mitch: But I want to come home and live with you!
Mom: You want to live with me and Daddy?
Mitch: Yeah, and dad too. I want to go back to high school…
Mom: Dad’s rented out your room.
Mitch: You rented out my room, Mom?! To who?
Mom: You remember Mr. Efferet. He’s the plumber.
Mitch: Well can’t Mr. Efferet and I share it? Mom, I don’t want to stay here anymore!
Mom: Now Mitchie! That doesn’t sound like Mama’s little soldier.
Dad: Mitch, it’s you’re dad.
Mitch: Hey dad.
Dad: Are you crying?
Mitch: Yeah…
Dad: Well, as long as nobody sees you…
Mitch: I’m just a kid!
Dad: You’ve never been “just a kid”.

Moving thread from IMHO to MPSIMS.

You need to hurry up and get out of your mom’s house.

It’s getting tough for her and me to find time together.

Relax, dude. Finals will be over soon.

What kind of hats are we talking about?

I’m disappointed that I don’t see more dopers here to defend living with their parents.

I love that movie!

(Real Genius, in case you don’t recognize it…)

PSXer: yeah, exams stink. Studying your butt off stinks. Do try to stick it out; your options in life are generally a lot better with a college degree.
