Reasons for discouraging the wearing of the niqab.

Can you imagine poor Abdul's shock upon lifting the veil? There's gotta be a law against that, or if there isn't, there should be.

Why?

The whole purpose of the niqab or hijab is to take away the focus of the physical beauty or otherwise of the female partner and instead direct it to the 'personhood' thereof. IOW, it shouldn't matter that your new wife is grossly hairy and ugly, because it's the personality underneath that REALLY matters.

That the courts have annulled his marriage is reprehensible.

Fuck 'em.

It seems like I've read this "story" several times over the past couple of years and it's always some unidentified couple from some unidentified Middle Eastern country.

I find it odd that they can't identify what 'Arab country' was even involved here.

Yep. The question is who's doing the deceiving: the woman, the culture, or the "news media" who repeat this supposed story without any detailed factual support -- the old who, what, when, where, and how of good journalism.

And if even the BBC are doing it, what are the chances it is less prevalent elsewhere?

Look at the date of the news report. No wonder you've read the story before.

Ca3799 said "several times over the past couple of years". This occured in February this year, and I came upon it today.

If they name the nationality of the envoy then it will identify him personally. Due to draconian British libel laws no British journalist would mention identifying details, and I doubt it is a good idea even for this message board to mention them if known.

I disrepect the BBC for political bias in what they don't report and for lack of balance in foreign affairs, but I don't doubt that if they say this happened then it happened.

The Daily Mail is slightly helpfully quotingDubai's official government newspaper as the source.

I appreciate the OP is being humerous, but the banning of Islamic garb in Europe is a serious political issue, that I for one disagree with.

Both these things are fixable with permanent depilation techniques and eye surgery. I wonder why they never had them done.
