I didn't know there was somebody who didn't know that. He left music for film early on and dropped the Marky Mark thing quickly.

All I could think of during the few minutes that I watched the interview is what Mark Wahlberg and Laura Logan did together after the shooting was finished.......

Well, there can be some confusion between Mark Wahlberg and Mark Walberg, two different people.

I guess I live a sheltered life. And I thought he was pretty good at the Marky Mark thing.

How old are you? IME, people older then 35-40 or younger then 20-25 tend to know of Marky Mark, in that they've heard the song Good Vibrations. IME it's the people that are 'children of the 90's' that saw the video enough times and were exposed to him often enough that they either recognized him, knew what his real name was when he was signing or when he started acting and someone mentioned who he was it didn't go in one ear and out the other because they were familiar with his work.

This is the first time in my life that I've seen Marky Mark and Good Vibrations in the same sentence.

But I did know that he now goes by his full name.

I'm 65. I was aware of him for a while, but must have missed, or forgotten (in a fog ) the transition.
Proves one thing though, talent is talent.

Huh. I always thought he was an okay musical performer, but didn't really take him seriously as having a lot of talent. I kind of looked at him as leveraging his last name (shared by his then much-more-famous brother Donny) to get a recording contract.

When he started acting, again, I kind of transferred that sentiment and thought he'd prove to be ridiculous, make a few movies, and fall out of the business. I was wrong and I'm not too proud to admit that.

No way! I don't think anyone expected this acting thing to go well. I mean, he went from rap/techno/whatever star to underwear model to...really good actor. It was a huge leap.

I got on board after I saw Boogie Nights.

Yeah, he earned my grudging respect too.
I never knew him as other than a goofy attention-getting act; I didn't even WANT to hear any of his music. (Um...still not sure I ever have...) So when he went to the acting thing, and didn't suck...and then showed some pretty decent chops, well...I was surprised. Happily, though.

I don't think of "talent" as meaning "I like" or "I don't like". I think talent is the ability to do a thing better than most people can. Penny Marshal must have saw something of his talent.
I didn't see the movie. I hear it was pretty good.

It's like Brad Pitt. I first took big notice of him as the creepy spree killer in Kalifornia, so when I heard people refer to Pitt as a shallow pretty boy, I was mystified. The actor playing the frightening and freaky and terrifying and dirty Early Grayce, a pretty boy? You must be kidding. (later I realized I had seen Pitt before, in Thelma and Louise and liked him, but didn't know his name and forgot about him)

I would say that that's pretty accurate. Anyone younger than 25 or so might only be familiar with Mark Wahlberg the actor and not make the association with Marky Mark the classic dance tune from 1991.

I was always pretty much impressed with his acting ability. Even his older pre-Boogie Nights films like Renaissance Man and The Basketball Diaries.

He was pretty funny in Date Night and The Other Guys.

FYI, his brother Donnie Wahlberg was in New Kids on The Block and has enjoyed a fair amount of acting success as well.

I never took him seriously at all before his acting career. I just saw him as kind of a lame rapper and a model who was known for being willing to pull his pants down. It was the move, Fear, that won my respect when he turned in a genuinely menacing and scary performance. Something I never would have expecred out of "Marky Mark."

Anyone younger than 30, I suspect. Twenty-five year olds were born in 1985. They know as much about NKOTB-era music as they know about Menudo.

I don't think we should hold things over people's heads forever, but I've always been a little peeved that no one cares that Marky Mark blinded some guy when he was 16 while yelling racial epithets at him.

It'd be nice if he gave him some money.

I wouldn't say that "no one cares." I certainly care. And it's one of the aspects about him that I find most intriguing. I have to admit that I wonder if he's really shut down his demons or if he's just doing a really good job masquerading them for now a la Mel Gibson?

I've read his interviews and he's never tried to brush off his crimes. He seems introspective and remorseful. I can't say that I know that he's given his victims any money or a heartfelt apology, nor can I say that he hasn't.

Another odd thing about Wahlberg is that he's apparently a really good golfer. I doubt he got much playing time during his youth, so I find it really interesting that he was able to get so good in such a short amount of time.

He claims to be a devout Catholic, yet had several kids with his girlfriend before he married her.

He's sure an interesting person, if nothing else.

I didn't see Boogie Nights until years later, so the first thing I saw Wahlberg in was Three Kings. And I remember saying to myself "Hey, that Marky Mark guy was really good! Who would have guessed?"

Yup, and he's definitely not the only ex-con in the business. Danny Trejo looks more like the part; he's that guy with the deeply-lined and marked face who plays a whole lot of bad guys, and most recently starred in Machete. He grew up a gangbanger, did drugs, committed robberies and such, and did hard time in San Quentin. It probably helps his image that he's involved in programs to combat substance abuse and keep youth out of prison.

I heard he had a stand-in for the penis scenes. Could have been male envy though. Honestly, I don't remember the movie that well. Maybe I'll watch it again.

There was only one scene with Marky Mark's penis in Boogie Nights and it was a prothesis.

He did more than that, and continued to be an asshole at least through some of his early career. He also turned down a lead role in Brokeback Mountain because he was uncomfortable with the sex scenes.
