A Modest Proposal, eh?

Recently I participated in a thread concerning the tone of political discourse in America today,

My contribution consisted of the following sparkling commentary:

Quote:
It seems to me, you have, in your White House, at this moment, a politician who does not slag on his opponents, as enemies and brings the very thing to political discourse you're all craving. He is reasonable and able to compromise, seeking a middle way, trying to fix the broken machine.

And he has done nothing but lose support from the American people.

He has managed, during his term, to find Bin Laden, toss Gaddafi, wipe out a tier of Al Qaida, a couple of things that, you'd think, the Right would be giving him props for, no they dislike him too.

Y'all seem somewhat hard to please, to me.
While I certainly stand behind this position, it got me to thinking. Canadian's have always been in a unique position for spectating US politics. Sure, a small part of our national identity still consists of, "Well, we're not that!" We do enjoy watching our American cousins and their zany antics. If only because it serves to distract us from our own elected idiots antics. You see, we are as unhappy with our government(s), (either stripe), as you all seem with yours.

The thing about your guy is he can't seem to win, as per my remarks in the other thread. When they poled Canadian's they were far more supportive than American's. Y'all don't seem to fancy that he's so, well, reasonable, unwilling to play the attack dog, etc. He's almost, well, dare I say it, a little Canadian, in some ways.

Which brings us to our guy. Yeah, I know, he's a little mechanical. And not a great speaker. But he does have several traits y'all seem to fancy. Old, white, male, wealthy. He is seen as a lackey to the American's. On their bidding he's increasing airport security and will not revisit the marijuana laws. Canadian's aren't really very hot about either issue, more disappointed I should say. But they are steamed to understand that it's because it's what Washington wants. I mean, damn, we refused to go into Iraq, recognized Gay Marriage, come on. Many of his initiatives seem modeled on the American Predatory Capitalist ideal, and it chafes considerably. So, in many ways, this git is just a little to American for our tastes. Can you see where this is going?

I'm just saying, maybe, in the name of free trade, perhaps we could come to an arrangement. Stephen Harper, White, Conservative, for Barrack OBama, Black, Democrat.

Now, now, don't be too hasty. I'm thinking your political right will love this guy. He's already on board, can stick to the script, is very disciplined, and squeaky clean. He's got White House written all over him.

And don't worry about the O'Bama's, they're from Chicago, they won't even mind the weather. He kind of deserves it for all the grief he's getting about, y'know, ending wars and dictatorships, reforming health care, (even if it's not ideal, it's a start!), finding Bin Laden, etc. He's going to fit in beautifully!

Look, you don't have to decide right now.
Sleep on it.
Think about it.
