Help me think up a nickname

It's not a romantic relationship and won't be. He's started calling me Cupcake. (It's a joke--too long and dull to go into here.) I need a funny nickname to call him back, preferably food-related (though it doesn't have to be if it just sounds funny), but not something sexually suggestive. I'm drawing a blank.

Any ideas?

Years ago I hung out with two guys my age. Another guy, much younger, was always tagging along. The young dude kept asking us to help him pick a nickname, since we all went by nicknames. We chose Jism.

From that day on, we called him by his new nickname.

Nicknames should be organic, much as your Cupcake name appears to be (if it involves a long dull story to explain).

Don't force it.

A kid I went to school with, when he was a scraggly young freshman, someone called him "Barney Badass." Just out of the blue.

From then on he was known as "Barney" even by the future generation of freshmen, 4 years later.

I think real names as nicknames are a hoot.

May not help at all, but after Brando had been in his first three movies he was prompted in an interview to comment, "I've played a cripple, a creep and a kreplach, and it's time I did something else."

I'm not sure of the connotations outside a Yiddish environment, but for years I used that term freely instead of others. It was particularly difficult to understand Brando's point about "kreplach" when, best I could figure, it applied to his character in Viva Zapata!" I thought that was a cool dude!

You're free to use it for your food-related nickname, even if you don't know any more about its true meaning than I do. If it matters, I pronounced it "KREP-lock."

Bran muffin, to be exact. The food item generally resembles a cupcake, giving some parity to your nicknames for each other. The beauty is in the contrast, with cupcakes being sweet and delicious, where bran muffins seem rather ordinary and utilitarian (i.e., pretty girl vs. scruffy guy).

corn dog

pork chop (pronounced poke chawp)

Those are what I call my niece and nephew. Of course, at 5 and 8, they think it is hilarious.

What he said. I'm a nickname-y person - I give everyone I know nicknames, but they come on their own. You can't force a nickname, and you can't choose your own.

You could base the nickname on the guy's name, or some characteristic of his.

Some fantastic suggestions!! So far I'm leaning toward Beefcake, Corn Dog, or Pork Chop, but really, it's going to be tough to choose, there are so many hilarious ones. Maybe I'll rotate them.

For the record, I'm a nickname-y person, too (Have one for each of my 2 sibs and each of my kids.), and I agree that they're best when they arise organically, but this isn't that kind of situation. I'd rather call him by a nickname then his real name if he's going to call me Cupcake.

Thanks, everyone! I knew I could count on Dopers!

How about "Foot-long"?

Or, keeping with the Costanza theme: "Koko".

"Beefcake" is a bit suggestive-I think "Cubesteak" would be a fun variation.

Weird. I was going to say Pork Chop as well. That is what I call my youngest daughter and I don't know why. She is very petite and girly but thinks the name is funny.

I call my niblings "Gooflingtons" (singular: gooflington) a lot. Maybe he's a gooflington.

Last edited by Snickers; 11-03-2011 at 02:18 PM. Reason: Nibling. You know, the collective noun for nieces and nephews? Learn it live it love it.
