Entry-Level Jobs Working With Kids With Disabilities in Boston?

My brother has PDD-NOS, so as a teenager, I was involved with volunteering to help kids with developmental disabilities. I volunteered at Lekotek, a place for helping disabled kids have fun. I also was scorekeeper at the local Jewish Community Center’s disabled league’s basketball games.

I’m not religious myself, but my Orthodox Jewish connections think I might find some possible job opportunities with two organizations known as HASC and Bais Ezra, and I will certainly be exploring those possibilities in the coming weeks. But they’re in New York, and since I’m in Boston, I might as well look here first. Does anybody know of any places here in Boston which are regularly looking for people to take care of folks with special needs? I’m looking for an entry-level position which is as uncompetitive as possible. I’m willing to do anything for the job.

I suggest you look on the Boston Public Schools’ website for job openings, or else look in the newspaper want ads. That will give you an idea of the qualifications, references, etc. they require.

Do you have a bachelor’s degree? You may be able to get work as a behavior therapist/interventionist. I work with several behavior analysts who came out of Boston, so I know ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is an active industry there.

Try some of these:

I did a search on “behavior” under the education section. Even though you don’t have a degree in a related field, you still may be able to find work as an aide or direct service provider. The behavior field is always looking for men.

I’ll check that out, thanks.

That was about jobs, any jobs, in general. This is specifically about working with kids with disabilities and might attract a different group of people to comment. But if my having two posts about trying to get a job – because it’s really important to me and I wanted to get as much feedback as possible – offended your sensibilities as a fellow guest forum poster, I most sincerely apologize.

Thanks for your concern

why is it that the term disabilty has been prempted by the mental disabilty community? There are a LOT more disabilties then mental retardation. It makes nondisabled people think all people with disabilties are mentally defient.
