Personal morality and loving crass death metal

This is a list of a guy’s favorite bands:

Maybe he mispelled “cephalotripsy” which means “crushing the head of a fetus in the womb in order to effect delivery”.

The guy was charming and stayed at my flat for a few weeks because he doesn’t have a fixed address. He ended up taking a lot of my flatmate’s games as well as a video game console to the pawnbroker without asking. His “Political Views” on facebook are “I believe politics and politicians are scum”. He told me that he’d been living on the streets for four years while he was a teenager. Anyway when we went to the police we found out that he had been using a fake name which explains why the pawnbrokers we rang hadn’t heard of the guy’s fake name.

Is there any correlation between loving gruesome death metal and how liberal or conservative people are?

Are you more concerned about his political views or his criminality? Frankly, you’ll find people agreeing with that expressed sentiment on both ends of the political spectrum.

Honestly? Nope. Other than I doubt you would catch Pat Boone listening to death metal [OK he has been known to cover some seriously weird shit]

Some people honestly do not listen to lyrics [and with a fair amount of modern american music it is pretty impossible to make out any coherency in lyric singing for all the screeching] and go only for the beat.

[I joke that I got in touch with my inner headbanger as a response to people I worked with, I listen to Rammstein, Laibach, Tyr, Japanese electronica, and Romanian dubstep. To look at me at 50 as a fat handicapped old broad with mostly grey hair you would not see the inch long spiked haired punk of the 80s. Maybe I’ll dye my hair purple to match the wheelchair I am looking at getting.]

I think he also misspelled formaldehyde, btw.

The metalheads I am closest to aren’t really into death metal, but they certainly do listen to metal that doesn’t reflect their personal views/values. I do know a few people who are strongly religious conservative Republicans and love metal.
Personally, I don’t take the message of songs very seriously. I think of it as mostly a work of fiction and just like I read books that I wouldn’t want to act out, I listen to a lot of music that describes situations that I would never actually agree with in real life.

Sorry to hear that your friend turned out to be a sleazebag nonetheless!

I know three guys that like metal only, nothing else is good for them ( Rammstein, Metallica etc ). One of them is a perfectly regular guy.
And the two other are Jehovah’s Witnesses who’d never even dream of breaking the law or anything like that.

I think* that a lot of personality characteristics can be attached to music and I would generally think that someone into crass stuff like that is probably like you described. On the other hand I think metal fans in general tend to be more intelligent than the average bear.

Link to GQ thread I started abou tthis that hasn’t got much traction: Personality characteristics (including intelligence) and music tastes - In My Humble Opinion - Straight Dope Message Board

*It is just something I think from observation, but I fully accept I may be completely wrong. I am also not sure about causation/correlation etc.

Meh, an ex of mine used to be into some pretty hardcore metal, and I remember him walking 20 minutes into town just to return some overpaid change he’d been given at a shop the day before, because he hadn’t noticed until we got home.

If anything, a large contingent of metal fans are nerdy and harmless as shit. Some are violent, but those are everywhere, too. Listening to gangsta rap, you might think all the fans are gangstas, and not the dorky white suburban teenagers you see (saw) at the concerts.

The band Crass is Crass.

Hijack: when I hear the word crass, it doesn’t usually involve violence in my mind, but sex and fart or poop jokes. I know the dictionary definition is broader.

This. To tell a story about how this guy used a fake name and pawned all your stuff, then end with an unrelated question about political views really caught me off guard.

His taste in music is abysmal however he seems to be spot on with his pronouncements about politics.
