Who Do You Hate Less- Notre Dame or Alabama?

Speaking as a lifelong Subway Alumnus (as an Irish Catholic, I grew up rooting for Notre Dame even though I didn’t go there, nobody in my family went there, and I never even KNEW anyone who went there until I was in my 30s)… I know that the Irish are BOTH the most irrationally loved AND the most irrationally hated team in college football.

But the SEC in general and Alabama specificlly isn’t that far behind. So, which team will you be rooting harder against in the BCS Championship game?

I’m hardly a Notre Dame fan, but I absolutely despise Alabama. The jizz from SEC fans flying up in the air blots out the sun every Saturday, and I’d like to see them sit down and shut the fuck up for a change.

Alabama, hands down. Irish Catholic also, grew up a huge Fighting Irish fan, uncle and sister went there, and my grandparents worshipped that school. But once I grew up a bit and realized that ND really didn’t have the higher moral ground their fans claimed for them, I quit giving a rat’s ass about them. I haven’t exactly enjoyed their decade long slog of mediocrity, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I smiled occasionally when I thought about it. While I find many of their fans to be annoying as hell, and I find the hallowedness of their football program to be more than a little troubling, I don’t really hate Notre Dame.

But I hate Alabama. And all it took was living in Birmingham for a few years. I can’t stand Nick Saban. I can’t stand the houndstooth, the “Roll Tide!!!”, and the apologists for the program. But what really makes me despise them is their fans. There are, without a doubt, some very smart, very knowledgeable, very normal fans of Alabama, but in my experience, a majority of them are mouth breathing idiots who put waaaaayyyyy too much of their lives, personalities, and moods into rooting for their team. They are the fanatics that define fans. And not the cute, innocent “go team!” fandom of little kids and old ladies, but the “if you’re not with us, you’re against us, and by the way Fuck Auburn!” fandom that leads to serious acting out.

It does pain my ass that these are the two teams that are playing for the National Championship, but I also don’t like the University of Nike, so I’m rarely going to be happy. Which is one of the reasons I’ve all but given up on college football.

I didn’t particularly hate Alabama until Saban, but now I do. Fuck that guy. I don’t particularly like Notre Dame, but I like Manti Te’O and it’s about fucking time a defender wins the Heisman.

It’s also not like Notre Dame wins anything these days, so you don’t have to worry about their fans talking smack.

My sentiments exactly. It will be oh so sweet when an SEC team loses the big one. I’m not sure this is the year – I would much have preferred to see Oregon in this game; for one thing it would have been Immovable Object vs Unstoppable Force. Now we have 2 Immovable Objects leaning on each other for 3 hours.

But I will be rooting mightily for ND. I’ve got nothing against them, and was raised Catholic, and like Rudy.

I don’t have anything in particular against Alabama other than Nick Saban’s general shitheel-y-ness, hardly uncommon in coaches of major college football teams. But I’m sick and tired of the SEC and its booster masturbation. Unfortunately even that falls short of my loathing for Notre Dame and it’s moral superiority and God’s Gift to Football attitude. I would say “Go 'Bama,” but my actual plan is to just ignore the game. Go college football playoff.

Equal loathing. But the loathing is not that intense. I get tired of hearing about them, but they aren’t that hard to ignore. I don’t have any real favorites in college football, so these are just two teams that wouldn’t be on that list if I had one.

I don’t hate Alabama as much as I hate SEC fans in general. But I detest ND more, so I will hold my nose and root for 'Bama.

My main wish, however, is for it to be a complete blowout so the losing team can face the cries of “Dear God, what is that thing” (ie hear complaints that they never should have been there, and that the BCS screwed us again by picking a “wrong” opponnent for the “True Best team in the Nation”). If ND can pull off a blowout, I will pull for them. But I think if a blowout is to happen, 'Bama will have to be the team.

I don’t think it will prove much if 'bama loses. This was already clearly a down year for the SEC and they will be, what, 9-2 in national championship games (with one of those being a loss to another SEC team)?

I used to hate Notre Dame, but they’ve been irrelevant for so long that the hatred has worn off.

My hatred for Alabama is growing by the day. Most of it is boredom, I’d like to see another team win for a change; however, the fact that two of the most egregious recent football-related fan incidents (the “teabagging” and the tree poisoning) were committed by Alabama fans doesn’t speak well for them.

(Usual caveats about the extremists not speaking for the majority.)

I hate everything about Notre Dame. The NBC contract, the we’re too good for a conference attitude, touchdown Jesus, and I’m not a fan of the Catholic church.

I want Alabama to beat them so bad and for Notre Dame football to return to another 30 years of being irrelevant.

I’m no fan of Alabama, Saban, or the SEC. But, my middle finger doesn’t shoot up when I hear their name.

Notre Dame, Miami, and Michigan are the plagues on college football and I’d love for a year for them to miss bowl games.

As if there was any doubt, I say ROLL TIDE

Bump the size up, you weren’t nearly douchey enough. Your fellow Alabama fans would be dismayed at your amateurism.

I’m an ND grad, so my allegiance here should be clear.

Here’s a good little look into the history of this matchup, one which I’m really excited about. Yeah, I’m sick of Alabama and the SEC, but you can’t complain if you can’t stop them. Notre Dame’s defense is incredibly capable of keeping them in any game they play - it will come down to whether Alabama’s defense can force Everett Golson into making enough bad decisions (it’s not a matter of if, it’ll be a matter of how many).

Notre Dame hasn’t had too many chances to play the big SEC schools over the last couple decades, which is unfortunate. I don’t have any negative feelings towards them, particularly regarding the typical annual scheduling rants, etc., but it’d be nice to get something going. I doubt we’ll see anything develop as they start adding more ACC schools to their schedule, and try to balance that out with their traditional rivalries.

I also don’t see the outcome of the game really affecting my attitude towards Alabama/SEC, the thing I’ll be looking out for is reports back of how the teams’ fanbases react to one another in Miami. I have a hotel room booked, but if the ticket lottery doesn’t pan out, I can’t see myself going down for this one - but I have a ton of friends who’ll be there, ticket or not. ($2000/ticket? No thanks. Though it is pretty amazing that an alum made an anonymous gift yesterday to pay for half of the tickets for the students - they’re the ones who should enjoy this the most.)

You’ve been here long enough to know better than this, Doors. Don’t do it again.

Only reason this isn’t a Warning is that I found the Huge Red Font obnoxious myself. Only I can actually do something about it. :stuck_out_tongue:

The team I root for is Oregon State. The Beavers beat up the Irish in a couple of bowl games in the last decade. These days, I mostly pit Notre Dame. It must be hard for a team that was once so prominent fall on hard times. Coach Mike Riley is an Alabama alumnus. However, SEC fans are insufferable, especially Alabama. I cannot root for them. Reluctantly, go Irish!

This pretty much sums up my feelings exactly. Not a ND fan, but the SEC and its fans just piss me off.

I am a lifelong Notre Dame fan and I don’t have half the hatrid for the SEC that I do for Ohio State. Who would ever have thought that Buckeyes cheating could cost Notre Dame a national championship?!?!? Or would undefeated OSU still be ranked behind Alabama even if they were eligible? But yeah, if the Irish were playing OSU, I’d get a “National Champs” tattoo right now (not really). As it is, I expect a good game and hope for the best.

OSU would provide a tough matchup for ND. I think OSU would get absolutely crushed by somebody like Oregon (those kinds of offenses really pose problems for the Buckeyes), and I think Alabama would also likely win, but while I think ND is better than OSU, I don’t think it would be a sealed deal, as they play a style that the Buckeyes performed very well against this year.

I went to a Catholic school on the Southwest Side of Chicago where there were very many Irish Notre Dame fans, all of them insufferable. Therefore, I will always hate the Irish more than any other team on God’s green earth. (Although I still would like to see them in the Big 10.)
