Bands named after places they are not from.

It occurs to me there are a lot of such acts.

The Bay City Rollers are from Scotland, not from Bay City, MI.
Boards of Canada are from Scotland as well.
Of Montreal is of Georgia.

And so on.

Anyone want to expand the list?

Per wiki:

Quote:
The core group that would eventually lead to the Oak Ridge Boys was a country group called Wally Fowler and the Georgia Clodhoppers, formed in 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were requested to perform to staff members and their families restricted during World War II at the nuclear research plant in nearby Oak Ridge, Tennessee (the birthplace of the atom bomb).... so often that eventually they changed their name to the Oak Ridge Quartet.
They did not become a super bestselling group until long after WW2, of course, by which time they had completely different members. The current Oak Ridge Boys are from several places New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Alabama.

Sort of. The band was formed in England, but only one of the members was born there.

Me and a bunch of other Brits used to be in a band called Milwaukee when we were at University. We also used to be called 10% Fruit. We had a bunch of bad names.

This practice goes back to the jazz age. The founding members of The California Ramblers were from Ohio. The Original Memphis Five weren't from Memphis. The Charleston Chasers weren't from Charleston. The Georgians weren't from Georgia.

That might make some sense if Glenn Danzig were the guy's real name.

It makes sense any way you want to look at it. Glenn was using the name for years (and in 2 bands) before he started his eponymous band. The band is named after him, not after the city or the city-state.

The names of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Big in Japan rather explicitly don't claim they are from those places.

I assume Kings of Leon is not from Spain.

ETA: Nevermind, their name refers to their grandfather, Leon, not the medieval Kingdom of León. My bad.
