Frequently some of my Facebook friends will share a post that features an image of some kind – often but not always an attractive woman – with the instructions “enter ‘1’ in the comments and watch the magic! And then share with all your friends!” Typically there will have been some tens of thousand of comments just saying “1.”
Has anyone tried this? Does anything actually happen?
As far as I know, that’s some sort of ploy to get a particular page’s EdgeRank up in the Facebook ranking algorithm. You can read about it in more detail here.
But, no, nothing happens. I’ve never tried, but I can’t see why anything would happen, and the linked page says nothing does happen.
Comment on this thread if you love America. Ignore if you love murder. Abraham Lincoln once said: “You can tell if they’re Christian by the size of their American flag.” 98% of you won’t have the courage to comment. Will you side with the murderers?
99.8% of you don’t have the courage to message me your credit card information and social security number. I’ll know those that are TRUE PATRIOTS will though.
I thought they said “1” to be similar to +1 or “first”.
Another one is the hoax that something will happen if they type “move”.
facebook doesn’t have a way to provide user supplied javascript with the regular type pages…
There are numbers you can type into Facebook that actually do something, though. Link “If you post random numbers into the sequence @[XXX:Y] or @[XXXX:Y] as a comment or status update, a name will appear when you press enter.”
I saw this last summer, tried it again just now and it apparently still works.
There’s a variant of this kind of thing where pictures of abstract patterns are posted that generate an illusion of movement due to (I guess) the saccadic movements of your eyes, presumably in order to make it more plausible that anything will happen on posting the magic word (since something ‘happens’ already, thus the whole thing must be interactive somehow).
