NFL Training Camps & Preseason 2013

After a LOOOONNG and horrible offseason, the worst I can remember not involving a labor dispute, NFL football teams are finally starting training camps this week.

It is a time when even the worst franchises share the same record with perennial contenders, all fans can dream of playoff glory, and the delusional think they can glean the fall’s results from what UDFA gets the most reps at the end of exhibition games.

New coaches begin sculpting their vision, hotseat coaches sharpen their resolve, and even the best look for that missing piece to put them over the top.

Rookies widen their eyes and learn the ropes, veterans stive to prove their worth, and the fringe players fight for those last few roster spots.

So, what surprises are in store for us in 2013?

What are your team’s most interesting storylines? What are the most important camp roster battles? Any general predictions on 2013 success? What camp fodder guys are you rooting to make the final 53? Biggest rookie impact? What should I eat for lunch today?

League-wide, what erstwhile joke of a team will shock with a division title? Which formerly proud squad will hang their heads after losing a tiebreaker for the last wildcard spot? Who among the sophomores will continue rising and who will slump? Predict rookies of the year; MVP contenders; passing, rushing, and receiving champions, and 30-something cliff fallers.

Football’s back, thank Og!

The Texans reaaly need a healthy Brian Cushing back again. Conor Barwin and Grover Quin are gone, Ed Reed’s recovery is still in question and no one seems willing to say when he can start playing, so there’s a big if in the D right there.

DeAndre Hopkins hopefully will be the #2 receiver they’ve been looking for opposite Andre Johnson. The biggest need though is for Shaub to both stay healthy and be able to be productive come the playoff scramble at season’s end. He did not produce late in the season last year and our PO wins stopped at 1.

I also follow Dallas, so sitting behind a very soft, heavy, seemingly out of shape NY Giant DT Shaun Rogers on a return flight from the Carib last week made me… happy?

Football!!!

Some quick random and nigh but unintelligble thoughts:

  1. One story I’m fascinated by is whether the read/option stuff will work this year. Defensive Coordinators now have some tape and more time to prepare for it this year, and it will be fun to see if it turns into the Wildcat or into Air Coryell. My gut feeling is that at least a couple QB’s will miss games thanks to hits, which would be a huge disincentive to running it, but QB’s will also be more likely to slide or go out of bounds to avoid big hits. I think it will put a bit of stress on the refs when a DE plasters Kaepernick after he hands off or someone hits RGIII during a slide. Should be interesting.

  2. Von Miller’s suspension makes me sad. I liked the guy and thought he was a guy I could root for. Once again, the reality of NFL football never lives up to my hopes.

  3. I love watching the Jets implode, and last season was so much fun for that. Then they go ahead and draft Geno Smith, trade away their best player, and more drama from Rex and this year may be even more fun.

  4. Closely akin to that, I’ve loved the Patriots offseason. Apparently the “Patriot’s way” include murder now. I know it’s too much to ask that they fall off too much, but I’ve loved watching them struggle.

  5. Can we stop with the Seahawks “dynasty” talk and “best team in the NFL” talk yet? I love Russell Wilson, but I hate Sherman and Carroll, so rooting for them puts me in a tough spot, but calling them anything other than a contender is kinda silly at this point. They were very fortunate staying healthy last year, and I think the lack of a pass rush and having some of their games on tape for Defensive Coordinators to look at may rain on their parade.

  6. The Bears’ defensive performance last year was absolutely amazing. Their DVOA (thanks Football Outsiders!) was the best performance by a defense in 5 years. And they were one of the healthiest teams in the NFL (3rd, behind the 49ers and the Vikings). Despite those two thing, the Bears still couldn’t make the playoffs.

If “regression to the mean” and old Father Time catch up to the Bears this year, it could get ugly. Gosh I hope so.

  1. Colin Kaepernick is quickly rising on my “douche” list. Sure it may be the 180+ yards rushing the Pack gift wrapped for him in the playoffs last year, but the more I learn about him, he sounds like kinda a douche. The Dolphins hat, the nude photos, the wearing sunglasses inside. I just don’t like the guy much. Which is good, because I think if he doesn’t change his style of play, he’ll take a beating this year.

  2. I am torn on Chip Kelly. He’s a complete jagoff for running away from Oregon as the NCAA comes sniffing around, but he’s articulate, funny, and interesting. I like that he doesn’t kowtow to Vick, that he insists on open competition, and that he drafted Matt Barkley. It should be interesting to see how things go in Philly.

  3. The Packers! Same old, same old in Green Bay. Build through the draft. No big free agents. And lose some players to free agency/retirement. The offseason is rarely a big deal for Packer fans.

What is a big deal is the defense, especially after the monumental meltdown in the playoffs last year, but we’ve known that for years. I like their secondary quite a bit, and they still have Clay Matthews, but they lost Desmond Bishop and Charles Woodson. They need their D Line to stop the run better, and to be better tacklers as a team. I’m excited to see what Datone Jones can bring and to see Raji play in a contract year, but there are way too many question marks.

I fully expect another year where the regular season is almost secondary and the fans look more to go further in the playoffs than it looks to focus on the regular season. I just want the team to avoid being among the worst in the NFL in injuries.

  1. C’mon football. Hurry up.

I saw the first trailer for a game (HOF) the other day, darn near got all misty eyed. This off season seemingly lasted forever, it’s about damn time!

One writer’s take on training camps.

http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/54326764

I’m eager to see what kind of production Giovanni Bernard and Tyler Eifert can add in their rookie campaigns for the Bengals offense. I also think that Giovanni has a shot at offensive ROY if he gets enough touches and stays healthy.

I expect the Bengals defense to once again rank in the top ten. Margus Hunt is super intriguing as a prospect and is a freak of nature. Geno Atkins, Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap will continue to be a dominant force on the DL. Dre Kirkpatrick, our first round CB from last season, will finally be healthy and contribute, so the secondary should be better.

Big questions remain at MLB though, with shitty Maualuga slated to be there again, even though Vontaze Burfict played lights out last season as a UDFA and is a natural MLB.

Finally, Andy Dalton and the offense as a whole needs to take a couple steps forward when it comes to crunch times in games…and they need to win that first playoff game and get that monkey off their backs.

Longshot prediction: AJ Green will continue to be a stud.

ETA: Forgot to remind you folks that my beloved Bengalis are on Hard Knocks once again so don’t forget to watch!

The 49ers open camp with Colin Kaepernick as the unquestioned starter, and being a more outspoken team leader. The biggest team questions are 1) will the read option continue to be showcased? (The Pistol formation is not synonymous with read option.) 2) will the pass rush return, and how will the rotation work? 3) can the new secondary stop hemmoraging points?

Position battles are starting free safety, with rookie Eric Reid going against free agent Dahl and reserve holdovers Spillman and Robinson. Also the second wide receiver spot is wide open, AJ Jenkins, Rookie Quinton Patton, Ricardo Lockett and Kyle Williams fighting for snaps opposite Anquan Boldin. Michael Crabtree is out for a while with a torn achilles tendon.

Other questions, rookie TE Vance MacDonald has looked good in minicamps, so how much will he play and how big an impact will he have? Who will be the fourth RB? Anthony Dixon has survived on special teams, but Jewel Hampton looks like a diamond in the rough (I predict he’ll lead the league in preseason rushing yards).

I find the QB position to be intriguing this year, with a fair number of QB’s who will be having “prove it” years. Just to name a few:

Blaine Gabbert, Jaguars
Josh Freeman, Bucs
Mark Sanchez, Jets
Christian Ponder, Vikings
Jay Cutler, Bears
Sam Bradford, Rams

It should be interesting to see which fail miserably (Gabbert? Sanchez?), which succeed (Ponder?, Bradford?), and which have the same old type of middle of the pack kind of year (Cutler? Freeman?).

Then there are QB’s who are still in their grace period, but who haven’t impressed me much at all, that I want to watch:

Brandon Wheedon, Browns
Andy “Thank God I’m throwing to A.J. Green” Dalton, Bengals
Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins
Jake Locker, Titans

I’m on record as thinking neither Tannehill nor Locker will be successful NFL quarterbacks, so I’ll be watching to see if either develop at all. It seems a lot of NFL guys like Tannehill, especially with the additions of Wallace, Gibson, and Keller.

As with all things NFL, we will see. I just wish it would hurry up and get here.

Jesus Christ, Hamlet, what in the world happened to Eddie Lacy? Did he eat his signing bonus? How does someone playing a skill position in the NFL get that fat that fast?

Bad camera angle. You can see the video here, and he doesn’t look fat. He is a big, bruiser though.

No one who was paying any attention to Packers camp was fooled by that picture. Fun bit of Twitter panic though. Lacy and Franklin both look really intriguing so far I have to say.

The Saints open camp with Charles Brown penciled in at LT, but he’s got some competition from often injured free agent signee Jason Smith and rookie Terron Armstead. I think Brown is going to win the LT job, but I hope either of the other guys bumps Zack Strief for the RT starting job. Strief really didn’t get it done last year.

Other storylines…Will Smith transitioning to OLB from DE. He’s getting a little old for a position change, but I’ve seen positive reports.

First round pick Kenny Vaccaro has been looking good at safety so far.

And Green is supposedly finally healthy and making moves. I’m cautiously optimistic about their running game this year.

Me too, they don’t need a great 1,500 yard rusher, they just need the threat of an effective running game and it will help tremendously. Lacy and Franklin are two different types of runners as well, so we can change it up. I was kind of excited to see what Charles Johnson could do (7th round pick with huge measurables, from a small school), but he injured himself. I am cautiously optimistic about Jermichael Finley. I have no basis for that, other than blind hope he picks his game up.

I am curious to see how the Saints bounce back after that trainwreck of a season last year due to the bounty scandal. I like the Saints and always have dating back to Archie Manning and Hebert. I have a thing for rooting for underdogs as a Bengals fan.

The 49ers search for a #2 wide receiver is going to shit. Injuries have plagued the inexperienced group, and none have stood out. I wonder if Austin Collie is on the radar.

There’s much chatter about TE Vernon Davis being moved to the position, but it’s not actually going to happen. He might see more snaps in the slot and occasionally out wide, but he’s too big an asset in the run game.

Finally some football tonight. Yeah it’s preseason, but it’s different teams hitting each other in a live game. I might tune in jjst to wash the taste of endless talking out of my mouth.

I’m oddly excited as a Steelers fan – their draft this year was amazing. Not only did they cover positions of need extremely well, everyone they drafted were high character/leadership/blue collar types. The past 5 years have been weird because the team kept inching towards everything that makes it hard for me to like football. Rapey Ben, James Harrison’s head hunting, the “Young Money” crew lead by Mike Wallace, character-concern draft picks like Mike Adams, etc etc. Ben’s still around, but most of the trouble types are gone, and the emphasis in the draft was to work hard and not be a money-hungry bastard.

Plus, the O-Line is finally, finally not going to completely suck (if they can stop falling on each other, we just lost an UDFA for the year due to this, who looked like a legit backup). Last year was a transition into a more modern blocking scheme under the new offensive coordinator, and Ben and Heath put up career numbers until they got hurt. What really hurt was not having a decent run-game, but Le’Veon Bell is making a ton of noise in camp: he catches everything thrown at him, he constantly makes smart reads, he’s nearly impossible to block. If he can do that in a game situation, he will be one of those key pieces to getting the team back to contending. And all signs are that Markus Wheaton might be our #3 receiver, which would be pretty incredible – our offense would be faster, more dynamic, will keep Ben upright more, and we won’t miss Wallace at all.

And everyone laughs at how old the D is, but that’s just because they’re experienced, they were still one of the top D’s last year. With the new linebackers coming in, we’re a year or two away from having the best linebacking corps in the NFL. Safety is still thin, but Sharknado Thomas looks like the real deal, and Sean Spence is now expected to recover, so Troy’s (imminent) retirement won’t sting so bad. And the secondary is also FINALLY starting to improve, especially in terms of depth, but we’re still a few injuries away from being picked apart by the better QB’s. A lot of the newcomers are supposedly ballhawks, which we’ve been missing for a few years, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

And the special teams are still… special. We’ve collected a lot of high ceiling UDFAs and castoffs from other teams, but I’d be surprised if any of them will make impact. My hope for the year is for them to be competent, not fumble, and tackle. That’s it.

With that said, it’s still a transition year. 10 wins seems doable, maybe even a mild playoff run, but I think we’re a year or two away from being contenders again. I’m mostly excited because the offense finally has the toys it needs to work (well, we still suck at TE without Heath, who’s out till December IIRC), and there’s a lot of high-upside players from the last few drafts who might finally get a chance to start. And if only a couple of our recent defensive picks reach their potential, we’re going to (once again) have an elite defense that makes big, crazy plays – although that’s realistically a year or two down the road.

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but there is (semi-)real, live, NFL football on TV at the moment.

Not a very good one. The HOF Game is always terrible.

I’m not sure Dallas has any starters in the game, and the Dolphins look terrible. Tannehill was in for only a couple series, but he was awful.

Some people think Miami might be decent this year, but I’m really not seeing it. When a team goes out and spends $97 million in free agency it never works out, for a fairly obvious reason: teams that are already good don’t need to spend $100 million on free agents, not to mention teams that are already good generally don’t have $100 million to spend on free agents.
