…but the Facebook registration agreement should say something about it a parody site. Maybe all Onion links on Facebook should come with a warning label: This Isn’t Real, Stupid!
The Onion doesn’t say they’re a parody site on anything, ever. Why would you think they are? They say right there on the masthead, they are America’s Finest News Source.
Enjoy,
Steven
And they are!
Mostly related…
I “liked” something from The Onion yesterday. Facebook helpfully suggested the following other pages as being similar:
The Economist
The Scientist
The Colbert Report
The Rachel Maddow Show
Well, they do sometimes have the Latin phrase “Tu Stultus Es” up at the top…
A great part of the general public are morons but so are many news reporters which is less excusable.
In 2003, when the invasion of Iraq the Onion published a bit saying the USA would select the next president of Iraq in a TV game show called “Appointed by America”. Some Spanish news reporter took it to be for real and it was published in a conservative newspaper in Madrid as legitimate news. A couple of days later they issued a retraction only saying “the news turned out to be false” but not telling they had fallen for a piece of comedy.
There have been other cases of Spanish news repeating Onion stories as legitimate.
Then of course, there are plenty of false news mindlessly repeated by American and other sources. I remember the recent story about “Spanish architects add stories to a high rise building but forgot to add the elevator” which was just false but repeated all over.
Most people are morons. Think about it on election day. All those people around you? Morons.
Here in Canada, we have an awful, unfunny radio show called ‘‘This is That,’’ which makes up stupid news stories. People get fooled by them quite regularly.
I’m fairly certain this article was meant to troll gullible readers.
I see far fewer Onion articles being reposted as real than I do Daily Currant articles. And there are a couple of other sites that similarly get posted…Freewood Post is one. It seems like the Onion is probably famous enough that most people do realize it’s not real, but the others aren’t.
Wait, you’re insisting that Facebook links posted by FB users should be labeled by Facebook so that someone who doesn’t understand that the Onion is a parody site won’t be confused?
Why would the Facebook registration agreement state what you asked? Does it make a statement for any other type of site, other than (obviously) porn?
I believe the OP was meant in jest and not to be taken seriously… you know, like The Onion.
But if your post was written in all seriousness it is probably a sign that the OP might need to be taken seriously as well because obviously a lot of people have difficulty separating jest from reality.
The Daily Currant is one that snags a whole bunch of people. Its a satire news site but not as good as the Onion and much well known. The lack of being as well known has trapped a lot of folks who forward their articles.
Aside from not being as good, which I agree with, The Daily Currant is really written in a different style than the Onion. From the handful of articles I’ve read on there (and admittedly got taken in a few times by), they seem to generally avoid the absurdity of The Onion by design. The Onion wants to make you laugh (and perhaps cry, and think and other stuff… but primarily laugh). I think it’s the DC’s goal to out and out fool people.
Back when you had to understand DOS to use a computer, we didn’t have these problems. Not that I miss programming myself.
