Very entertaining reading - people on Facebook who thought articles from 'The Onion' were real

One example:

Planned Parenthood Opens $8 billion Abortionplex

Facebook comment: "Please tell me this is NOT true! My heart and soul weeps for these deceived people! America, please wake up!!! Killing babies is NOT normal!!! They will give pedicures to the moms after the abortion! Federally funded and all! So sad!!!

mmm

Scary thought for the day: These people can vote.

We recently did this. I like The Onion but…

It’s funny how most of these posts quickly turn into rants against Obama/socialists/hand-outs/government even when the article has nothing to do with Obama/socialism/hand-outs/government. Not “ha-ha” funny…no wait, it is ha-ha funny.

The sad ones are the ones who seemingly can’t understand when told that The Onion is satire.

The really worrisome ones are the ones who upon being told that The Onion is satire become belligerent and double down.

Well, that’s just your opinion.

You know, with all the radiation from Fukushima in the ocean, it totally makes sense that a resurrected giant Osama Bin Laden could rise up out of the water and destroy New York and Washington, D.C.

No, wait. It doesn’t. Never mind.

And one’s in office! Providing that the FB image itself is real.

…man.

Got to assume at least some of these involve the troll factor, however.

#6 Even if that were true, so? I for one am appalled that random chance and spending at least $1 favored him.

#11 Family Guy did that, sort of (Fred Savage is Newt Gingrich).

#12 Oscumba? I thought I knew all the insulting names for him! I’m out of touch I guess. And it sucks that the commies went back in time to kill him.

#28 Poe’s law in action. I would not be surprised if this were from a real new site.

#32 Muslimjew!

I wonder if some of these people might be interested in reading Landover Baptist. It’s the truth!!!1111 And someone used up their capslock quota.

Enough people thought the story about Obama’s 19-year-old son being a guest at the Democratic convention was true that Snopes has an entry about it.

About 10 years ago, the Onion did a story about how young children are renouncing Christianity and embracing satanism because of Harry Potter. Someone wrote a letter to my local newspaper AND QUOTED THAT STORY. The letters editor must not have known what the Onion, which was popular even then, really was.

There was also the story about chewable birth control pills for sexually active pre-teens. Interestingly, just months later, a drug company did start producing that exact product, the idea being that a woman could take it anywhere, at any time, and not worry about having a beverage handy. Like they’re huge or something?

Razor manufacturers started competing by adding more blades. They went to two. Then to three.

In 2004 The Onion published

In September 2005 Gillette anounced a five bladed razor

I was a kid when multi-bladed razors first came out, and MAD magazine had a parody called (something like) the Gillette LXXVI - a 76-bladed razor. It was accompanied by a drawing of a man with his face lathered up, rubbing something against his chin that looked like an accordion.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Keep in mind the SNL parody commercial for the Triple Trac Razor kept 3 blade razors from being introduced for years.

That’s just a theory.

I think Chris Rock once did a joke about O.J. releasing an instructional video, “Here’s how I would’ve done it”. THEN you know what happened!

Everyone gets suckered in from time to time by unbelievable stories. We all have our gaps in knowledge that can be exploited. Maybe someone who has no idea about reasonable population sizes and accident/disaster histories could honestly believe that 48 million people died in a Black Friday mishap because 48 million is just filed under “big number” and there are a lot of stories where “big number” of people died in X disaster.

But most reasonable people, upon learning that The Onion or Daily Currant is made up will will heave a sigh of relief and thank Og that they were fooled and were wrong. The truly disturbing are comments about “that’s your opinion” and the doubling down on stupidity. “I don’t believe wikipedia” and the rest.

My personal favorite was the friend who pointed out that The Onion was fake, and that America doesn’t even have drones. What a winner there.

Yes, O.J released a real book called “If I Did It.”

Ignorance = not knowing something.
Stupidity = not knowing something, and either being unwilling to learn if it is important (“capital of Canada? I don’t know that shit!”), or unwilling to change your opinion when faced with credible evidence.

I think that was her point. But note that it wasn’t actually released but cancelled due to hue and cry. Later on, it found a release.

There is another site nationalreport.net that focuses on fake conservative news. It’s the source of President Obama personally funding a Muslim heritage museum (a Fox News staffer was taken in by that) and him naming November to be Muslim Appreciation Month. Once a week, someone on my FB links to that site. Sometimes, they are close friends who I know to be intelligent people.

Yesterday, it almost got me. A friend posted a link to a story about an elementary school having cross-dressing day for LGBTQ awareness. My jaw dropped until I read the URL & then breathed a sigh of relief. Yep, I almost fell victim to POE.
(I would not be surprised if some school in some really far-Left district did this in the near future.)

Thanks for that link. I wasn’t aware of it, and hope I would’ve never thought it was real if I just saw one article (real = the authors take it seriously, not that it’s factual).

With the whole website in front of you, it’s pretty obvious. Amin Brew tea (groan) or a “transracial” bro in blackface. The “author” appears to be a feminist stereotype though and is from (where else?) Portland. Don’t google stuff from the website, all kinds of “concerned” people taking it seriously.

It’s literally unbelievable that the OP wasn’t linking to Literally Unbelievable.
