Multiple choice poll on the way…

Even though the poll says

I will stop keeping track of any late votes after 11:00 AM CDT (Noon EDT) Saturday.

I got Oregon (major upset), and both USCs…the real one in the SEC, and that other one out west.

Sparty
USC

While I know it’s a bit early to rely on Sagarin’s numbers, it’s fun while I’m getting my own feel for where teams are in terms of strengths. They helped me choose a couple of “upsets” with Toledo and Va Tech. It’s time for Beamer to unleash the dogs of war!

I’ll make my picks later today, but I went ahead and scored out the first week:

Oakminster 4
Doctor Who 2
Frosted Glass 2
Nauplius 2

I have a question. Washington was ranked #25 last week, and won, but fell off the poll anyway. Do these polls follow any rules?

If they do, they aren’t out in plain sight that I have seen. My understanding (limited, for sure) is that the published rankings are composites derived from the lists provided by the contributors. As such, the individual rankings by contributor vary based on the whims and “analysis” of that individual. There does appear to be strong bias to “what we said last time” so that the up and down movement of a particular team’s ranking tends to stay near where it was unless the team lost big time, came close to losing, or made a big score against a “better” team.

I haven’t been able to find the site where the individual voters’ votes are shown, but the diversity – especially the “boat rockers” – is eye-opening.

Nice work! Thanks for the effort!

This is close to what I was referring to:

Ohio St also won, but still fell from #5 to #8 (I think).

Yeah, but I wasn’t looking forward to picking Ohio State to lose again. I was going to pick Washington to lose again.

And thank you for the links Zeldar.

Geez, BobLibDem, don’t hide your feelings, tell us how you really feel about the SEC…

Crap. Hey, Zeldar, can you disregard my vote for South Carolina this week? I got ahead of myself and thought they were playing UGA. Also, thank you so much for bringing these polls back. I had a lot of fun last year.

Glad to. That goes for anybody who wants a do-over on votes. It’s not like we’re paying for the privilege!

Yo, armedmonkey, you interested in maintaining that week-to-week accounting you did last year?

Oh, hell no :D. You’re doing a fine and admirable job.

Besides, you’ve expanded the poll to 25 and changed the scoring system. I’m fine with both, I’m just busier this fall. The job’s taking off so I’m going to have to work a lot of Saturdays, but far from all. Hospitals do have to run on weekends.

Also, and apropos of nothing, I’m going to miss watching Auburn v LSU later on this season. I doubt I’ll even get to see a single snap. My sis has bought tickets to UGA v Vandy in Athens and we’re going. I love my sis, but is it bad that I’m kinda rooting for Vandy?

Lastly, last year I offered prize to the winner. I might do that again.

I don’t mind doing the scoring. I’ve already got a spreadsheet set up for it.

Based on the first week, you may as well just give the prize to Oak now. Scary that guy is…

Sorry, but I can’t bring myself to pick an SEC team not to lose an out of conference game nor can I pick a Big Ten team to lose an out of conference game. I may finish last every week, but at least when I do have a good week I’ll finish way out in front.

Thanks much, Zakalwe! Much appreciated. You’re right about Oak having a running start. Good luck to all.
