How did this woman get elected (Pelosi)

Lets vote her out. This video comes from an interview Nancy Pelosi did with Chris Wallace.

In it, she proves that not only is she out of touch, she’s absolutely ignorant too.

How did this woman get elected? This video is full of shining gems that prove her lunacy.

Some actual arguments for people who don’t want to sit through a YouTube video would be nice.

And as she’s a member of Congress, the vast majority of people here aren’t in a position to vote for or against her anyway.

It probably took you longer to write your post than to watch the video. Why would you bother commenting on a 1:20 minute video that you arent able to even click on? Illogical

PSA to everyone considering watching the video: it’s a waste of time.

Welcome to SDMB, where many members have a policy of not watching videos as a prerequisite to debate. This one’s just a minute long, so I’ll watch it.

…Huh. What, exactly, is the argument here? Is it that she’s proposing something that is so clearly against the second amendment that you’d have to be an idiot not to spot it? Well, color me idiot then, 'cuz I don’t get it. She’s in fact quite explicit in saying she supports the second amendment…

…Oh. Wait. It’s because she misspoke and said first amendment instead of second amendment. And this apparently is a “How did she get elected when she’s this stupid?!” gaffe.

…Welcome to SDMB. I hope you stick around.

Just one more week, just one more week. Maybe after that we’ll stop getting these sorts of posters for a while.

I wish the mods would wield the banhammer more freely at times.

Meh… the 2016 election cycle starts on Wednesday.

So here no one thinks it is important that their reps understand the difference in the 1st and 2nd amendment? I see.
You guys do understand that is what they vow to uphold right?

For her most recent term? Well, it appears that she circulated a petition and at least 40 registered voters signed it, after which her name was placed on the primary ballot. As she was one of the top two in the primary, she went on to the general election which she won quite handily.

California’s election system is a little weird now that they have top-two primaries, so this isn’t a stupid question at all.

Well, by God, that tears it.

I haven’t even watched the video, but just hearing it described is so horrifying-- so chilling–so disgusting–that I’m taking a stand right now, right here:

Next Tuesday, I will NOT vote for Nancy Pelosi! And I will be going to the polls to vote, you may rest assured of that!

Granted, I live on the other side of the country from her district; nonetheless, it’s the principle of the thing.

Was it really necessary for you to be told that the last statement was meant for people qualified to vote for her one way or the other? Sad.
Heres another tip for you. Make sure you open the door before trying to leave if you decide to go out today.
You’re welcome. Wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself.

Let me try.

Hi Cit! (or do you prefer Mr. 5?)

I think some Congresspeople can recite the numbers and names for many laws and some can’t. I’ve no idea which sort Ms. Pelosi is – I don’t think it matters much. But, I’ll bet money and lay heavy odds that Ms. Pelosi knows very well the difference between the 1st and 2nd Amendments! In the video, hers was a misspeaking, a slip of the tongue. Doesn’t that ever happen to you?

I’m smarter than most Dopers think (really! :stuck_out_tongue: ) but if someone followed me around with a tape recorder and edited a Septi’s Worst Bloopers tape I’d come across as a blithering idiot. Capische?

I’ve no idea what percentage of Congresspeople remember which Amendment was the 3rd, or what the precise difference is between the 9th and 10th Amendments. But few Americans can forget the 2nd Amendment with gun nuts harping about it over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Hers was a slip of the tongue! Get it?

For your rebuttal, I suppose you’ll find a YouTube of Ann Coulter haranguing for 15 minutes without a slip! :smack:

Generally the sign that I disagree with something Nancy Pelosi is saying is that her mouth is moving. I also don’t live/vote in her district so I can’t vote her out or in. Talking live and unscripted, and she misspeaks… stuff happens if you do it as much as she does. Could you do better on camera all the time? My disagreement does not make her by default stupid, ignorant, or evil. Frequently the policies we see as wrongheaded have more to do with a difference of underlying values than the policy.

I can loathe her policies and still respect her. That’s what representative democracy at least should be IMO.

Citizen5, it is considered good practice to actually take the time to post one’s own ideas in a debating thread rather than simply pointing at a link.

Beyond that, this seems much more of a rant than an actual debate.

It is being moved to The BBQ Pit.

Oh, good, now I can say what I really think about this moron. Thanks, tomndebb.

If you are referring to me than you completely failed to say what you “really think” besides a 2nd grade name calling tantrum.
I have been on her less than 2 hours. Congratulations, you now hold the record for fastest juvenile assumption in the forum history Im sure.

No, moron sums it up pretty well.

Which is about as useful as saying “I’m not a racist, but…” She could explicitly claim she supports the Fourth Amendment, but that doesn’t mean jack shit when you openly support illegal spy programs.

I am on record on this board of not being much of a fan of Nancy Pelosi. But at least when I started a thread and complained about her I did more than show up looking like a right-wing spammer and did more than just post a Youtube link.

I thought you didn’t like her.

The big reason she got elected in the first place is that she was a pretty good friend of the Burtons’ (Phil Burton was the popular Congressman from San Francisco.) So, Pelosi, who had worked her way up in the Democratic Party (She was finance chair of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, and had tried but failed to become head of the DNC), and whose husband’s brother was active in San Francisco city politics, got to know them.

After Phil died, and his wife Sala, who had run to replace him, was diagnosed with cancer, she decided not to run again in 1988, so she did her best to groom Pelosi for the spot, introducing Pelosi to the Burtons’ contacts and letting them know that they should back her. When she died in office, Pelosi, who had the support of Phil Burton’s machine, won the special election, and has stayed in office since.
