Ads for non-logged-in users

We’re going to start running a couple new ad series in a day or two. Since these are more in your face than the ones we’ve been running up till now, **we’re only showing these ads to non-logged-in users. ** If you are (a) registered, and (b) logged in, you won’t see these ads, regardless of whether you’re a guest or a member.

The two ad series are:

(1) an embedded video ad. These have been appearing on column archive pages for the past couple weeks.

(2) a popunder - the ad appears when you exit the SD page you’re on.

By “you” I mean “anonymous Web users who stumbled on us through search.” If you fall into that category, register and log in (you don’t have to post), and the above ad types will stop. You’ll still see the regular banner ads unless you become a member, in which case Cecil will smile beneficently on you and not show you those ads either.

Yea! Banner ads! Embedded videos! A pop under when you leave! Some occasional malware! There’s less advertising on redtube.

I hope you change your mind, especially about the pop under ads. I’m usually not logged in when I come here, because I don’t like how threads get marked read when I haven’t opened them when I’m logged in. Hopefully, as well, the videos will be silent if they self-start.

Having videos and pop under ads will only encourage ad blockers.

For one of the classier places on the internet, this site sure has some cheesy ads.

“In your face” ads are morally unjustified, whether most of us ever see them or not.

That’s one way of keeping away all the newbies with their fonts and colours.

Or it’ll tell them that this is a place where it’s acceptable. Why would a place that has 19 different kinds of ads (including videos) care if you use green font?

Are there any respectable websites that still have popunders?

Well, there’s The Straight Dope.

Oh, I see…

Does the website for the Hyatt hotel chain count as “respectable?”

*Someone *is trying to protect their coveted moderator status.

Come on, join the condemnation, it’s fun.

That’s a bit of an unjustified statement. A commercial decision on a for-profit website where users can easily leave does not have a moral dimension.

Hmm. It had never occurred to me that anyone besides lurkers would read the SDMB without logging in.

But soon you can’t leave without a pop-under ad, it seems. So, even if you’re offended by the in your face ads, you’re left with a little parting gift.

I understand that advertising is part of the internet, but ads that take over your computer, such as opening a new window for a pop up (and embedded videos–don’t get me started), are just malware in my opinion. If you can’t make a living without exposing your customers to such BS, you should re-evaluate your business model.

You won’t ever be seeing them if you’re logged in. I think if someone’s a customer of the boards, they’ll have an account in which they could log in and not have to deal with any ads, pop up or otherwise.

But I get the gist of your points.

I’ll bet you can’t catch me getting those ads!

Yes, I spend most of my time here unlogged in. Why bother typing those extra 16 keystrokes in my username and password just to read stuff? I log in when I want to post something.

No, I DON’T have any kind of ad-blockers or malware filters running on my mochine.

And yet. . . And yet . . .

I’ll bet you can’t catch me getting those ads! (If I see any, I’ll let y’all know.)

(Even now, under your current ad regime, I don’t see any ads on this site. None.)

Yes, I know a few additional tricks to avoid ads.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

What the hell is a mochine?

Machine. In this case a computer. Can also refer to a Cadillac assembled from stolen parts over many years.

I’m trying to distract Ed from the fact that I’ve been embezzeling the ad revenues for years.

So far, I got a nickle.

blank stare

Um, yeah.

I too only log in to post, not to read. I have never been particularly bothered by the ads on here. This will change.

Thanks, Ed, for convincing me to finally use an ad blocker to get rid of ALL your ads.
