I am a guest, and I accept my position as a guest.
I actually do not use ad blocker so that your advertisers get possible clicks and you get revenue… because I am a guest.
But, do you realize your ads actually obstruct the entire right screen of your board, thereby making it impossible for me to read a thread?
The ads on the right have no ability to close. You need to fix this. As I guest, I will accept the idiocracy level of ads as a response to my failure to pay for a subscription.
But, do you really want to stop all guests from being able to read your board without an ad blocker?
In before the inevitable members fall over themselves suggesting the OP buy a membership so he won’t have to put up with ads, completely missing the point
Wait, so instead you rushed in to make the same point, but as a guest, so you could smugly beat the members who might have done the same thing?
I’ll note that many of the ads I see when not logged in have an X in the upper righthand corner, so you can close them once they appear. And as for ad blockers, I’m seeing more and more sites that notice you’re running one and either nag you about it, or refuse to let you proceed with it running. (Forbes magazine, for one.)
I have been paying for a membership ever since the board went pay to post around 2004. I still get logged far too often and get the obnoxious ads that cover the right of my screen until I log in again. There’s got to be some sort of a happy medium.
The ones on the bottom are ok, they have an X. The one on the right does not have one I could find.
I actually accept the ones on the bottom as part of my free status and never x them out. It is the ones on the right (like the one that just popped up causing me to wonder if I spelled the words correctly which is unstoppable and completely obstructive.
I really like this board, and if my failure to subscribe means I have to have this, then ok. I am just wondering if it is more reasonable to put them all around my usable interface rather than obstructing my usable interface. Seriously, make it like idiocracy where i have to look at it the whole time, just don’t obstruct my ability to actually interact with the site. That really does seem counterproductive. You want to DRAW people in by interacting with your site… not drive them away.
Oh, and Saint Cad, loved your post. i would quote you in my response but the ads on the right hand side block out the quote button. I got my first one in this thread before the adds went all rogue on me. I have accidentally clicked 3 ads in a row trying to reply to your post
I am guest, I get it, but seriously… come on Shelly. Come on.
Yeah I’ve stopped visiting the site on my phone as every time I click a link to a thread, I get a popup ad and half the time something attempts to download. It’s annoying and concerning at the same time.
If nothing else, these ads are ensuring that this board gets to forever stay our own little secret, as nobody with a conscience would ever link to a thread here from another board, as a cite or for information.
Yeah that is very annoying having an ad blocking people posts and it seen like once you click on an ad to get rid of it that made it only worst ! I am seeing blank white space right now
Yeah, if you see some moral in not blocking ads, then you really need up your security software in the process. Not here specifically, but in general. So many supposedly vetted safe ad companies have wound up eventually putting out scumware in a few of their ads that it’s simply not very safe to not use a blocker, even if it’s a site you want to support. Don’t get caught with your pants down.
None of these things really has a negative effect on the viewing experience that I’ve noticed, except vigilink which is really annoying. You can’t preview links you’re about to follow on mobile because it just gives you a vigilink string of nonsense instead of previewing the site the person is linking to, and trying to share a link with someone by right click copying a link will share the long vigilink stream rather than the link.
